I got a ticket for going 82 in a 65...Advice please?

I got a ticket for 17 over in NC. Is there a way I can have it lowered by talking to the DA and avoid points on my insurance and licsense? This is my first ticket ever and I dont know how to go about it. I would rather not have to pay a lawyer if I can do it myself.

You may be out of luck due to the amount you were over and the speed you were going.
Here is the NC site for information:
http://www.aoc.state.nc.us/magistrate/waivable.htm
Generally, on traffic offenses, they are pretty standardized.
Next time, slow down. |

Kate that is what a lawyer is going to do for you, so yes you can call them.. I lived in NC for awhile, good luck.. |

you would be a fool to try to handle yourself.
Get the help you need or you ill pay for it in the end. |

It depends if they have you on radar or if your speed was estimated. If it was estimated, you can probably drag it out in court and have it reduced. |

my advice is PAY THE TICKET |

first , be polite, if you have a valid reason for speeding, and there are some, tho not many, explain to the judge, but do it contritely, dont come the......i am THE man...... be humble, ask if there is any community service you could do to try to recompence for your lack of good judgement. i'm not sure how long you have been driving, but if its a few years that may help you, if your a fairly new driver it will go harder on you, because one thing the police dont want to do, is scrape yet another person off of the highway and slide you into a bodybag. |

Slow down driving is a privilege. Step up to the plate and take your punishment. You should have been concerned about insurance, fines and points off your license when you got behind the wheel not when you got caught.. |

You did it, so you need to pay for it. Just like the rest of us. |

Well try not going 82 in a 65 area! |

maybe you shouldnt have been going 82.....
just tell the dude at the DA that you thought it was kilometers per hour, so naturally you went faster.
if he asks why everone else was going slower, just say they were all old guys. |

Why does everybody and his dog think charges should be somehow reduced just because they want them reduced, or even dropped? I am a little tired of it. Do people say "it's the first time I ever robbed a bank, and I don't want it on my record"? Would you sympathize with a person like that? It really isn't any different. Don't want a ticket on your record, you shouldn't have been speeding, right? Take your 2 points. Forget about traffic school, in NC you don't get there until you hit 7 points.
Ignore the advice of chris r, he is spouting something that is long proven wrong. If you send a cheque for more than the ticket amount, and they send you a refund that you don't cash, you have just contributed to their coffers, it doesn't keep you from being convicted or getting points. Amazing this stupid rumour still survives after almost 10 years!

You are guilty, no lawyer will change that. Be polite and agree with the judge, even thank his officer for caring enough about you and your life to slow you down. Commit to being a better driver because someone, somewhere, cares for you. |

I fix several tickets every month. I can tell you that in Southern Nevada, you get a much better deal hiring an attorney. With an attorney, the results are usually a reduction of the fine to a parking citation, which means no points and no traffic school, and no increased insurance premiums. Oh, and also, you don't have to go to court and waste a day.
Lawyers have more credibility with District Attorneys and judges. They also may take into consideration the fact that you hired an attorney as part of your punishment and reduce your fine. Sometimes this does happen.
I recommend that you ignore the pseudo legal advice you are getting here by people who do not know what they are talking about, and consult a real attorney. |

most places have traffic school. If this is your first ticket the judge can order you to pay court costs and attend traffic school. This keeps the points off of your license. I don't know if NC offers it but alot of states do. Check with the clerk of courts (I think that is the right court) in the county that the ticket was received. They will be able to tell you if they offer traffic school. |

If there was no accident you might plead guilty and ask the judge for leniency on the points. If that fails see a lawyer if the points mean that much to you. By all means slow down by at least 17 mph next time you are on that same road. Another approach would be to call the officer who wrote you the ticket and offer him a bribe not to show up on court day. Still another and probably more effective way would be to call the officer who gave you the ticket and threaten his family`s life if he refuses to back off on the speeding charge. Be sure to give the officer your full and correct name and your ticket number when you call so that he will know who`s ticket to dispose of. Also use a firm voice when you call the officer so that he will get the message and realize it would be best not to fool with you when you are in a hurry. |

wow...... I would consider this a waste of 5 points......
ummmmmmmmmm.............maybe you should've been smarter and gone slower!!
duh. |

Well first off not speeding is the best way to avoid a ticket. But in general if you go to the court date that they setup for you (it should be on your copy of the ticket) then in general the judge reduces the ticket. But you will still probably get 1-2 points knocked off and have to pay some of a fine. There is no point in paying a lawyer for this, it isn't worth it. |

Just try to fight it, usually when you choose to go to court the officer will give you a break. He will put you down for maybe 5-10 over. |

Go to court and pay the fine. The fine may be lower because you showed up in court. |

we all know courts are the biggest scam going .. ok first thing i know here in my state you stand in line and then when its your turn they call you in and ask what do u want to do just ask them is there a way we can get rid of today.. they usally cut it in half... but if you want to fight it and win try this
www.blurofinsanity.com/Speeding.html
How to beat speeding tickets, how to act in court. Everything about speeding and cops you need to know!
hope it helps
in my state i get the ticket reduced, lets say they reduce it to 100.00 dollars i write them a check for 101.00 dollars .. your asking why ??? there is a reason .. it messes up their books so they have to refund me a dollar ... so they will send you a check cut from the STATE now YOU DO NOT CASH THIS CHECK YOU THROW IT AWAY !!!! .. the state is waiting for thje refund check to be cashed .... thus completing the cycle of the case ! if you do not complete the cycle the case remains paid and open on a computer and no points will be added to your license for this to happen the case has to be paid and closed .... but for them to close it they need that check cashed !!! SO DONT .... EAT THE DOLLAR !!! ITS WORTH IT
hope it helps
