I hate the name Jake! How do I change it?

I am 18 years old and I've always hated my legal name and never felt as though it identified me at all.
My name is Jake, with a very common last name. As I've grown up, I've felt as though I've been victimized by the stereotype of people named Jake (blond, naive, athletic) and the many annoying rhymes and phrases associated with the name. ("Jake the Snake" and "Jeez Jake" as examples)
I really think that my parents chose the name because it would sound cute when I would be 4 years old, but they didn't bother to think about what it's going to be like to be 30 with a dog's name.
I've always dreamed of having a more unique name, and I've found one in a French baby book that I think really identifies me well. Now that I'm 18 and am legally an adult, I'm wondering how I can go about changing it.
Also, are there any major cons to changing my name, other than the fact that it takes a lot of government paperwork?

I don't mean to insult other people named Jake; I'm just giving reasons why I don't like the name applied to myself.

Go to your county court and get the required forms for a name change. You will be required to provide a state and federal criminal background check. The paperwork you get will explain where to send for these forms - they cost about $20 each and take several weeks to process. When you can prove that you have a clear background (and that you are not wishing to change your name for reasons of hiding from the law)
you will then go before a judge who will ask a few questions - like why you want to change your name, are you avoiding some sort or legal issue, etc.., and the name change will be granted. Your paperwork will tell you all that is necessary, in my state you are required to place an ad in the newspaper that runs for three days stating that you (state your name) will be henceforth known as (new name). You have to do that before court. After you do all that, then you have to go through all the tedious stuff of changing it - report new name to social security, driver's license, bank checks, place of employment, etc. If it is any encouragement for you to persevere - I had a red-bone coon hound named Jake. Sorry. |
