I have a question for lawyers?

I'm obviously not a lawyer, but my government class is having a pretend court play. I'm a lawyer, and I was just wondering does a lawyer always have to include asking the name of the person they are giving a testimony to? Does a lawyer give an opening and/or a closing statement? I'm having a 200 point project and I was just wondering if someone could give me some tips or basic ideas of the things lawyers do when they in court trying to defend their client.

The amount of questions necessary to qualify a witness is ridiculous, and a bit unnecessary.
"May it please the court" is generally reserved for appellate arguments and pre-trial motions and what not, not the actual trial. |

When I call a witness, I never ask "what is your name." Instead, I ask "would you introduce yourself to the jury, please?"
Opening statements come before any evidence and consists of a prediction of what the evidence will show. Closing arguments come after all the evidence andd consist of trying to persuade the jury to use the evidence (and the instructions from the court) to return a favorable verdict. |
