I received a warning to move my car or it'd be towed in 48 hours. Does this seem right? Should I complain?

I live across the street from the school community board of education office. This parking lot is in the village of the town, and since it is a school district office, it was built with local tax payers' dollars. MY tax dollars. There used to be a beautiful park here where people would walk their dogs or play catch with their kids, but now they tore it apart and placed an ugly parking lot so that the fat board members don't have to travel the extra two-minute walk to their building.

Now here's my problem. I have a heavily congested driveway, and parking on the side of the road is kind of a crash-magnet late at night (drunk/sleepy drivers, etc.). The board parking lot is HUGE, and I ALWAYS park on the very edge and keep my car away from everyone else's so I don't cause any problems. There are NO signs whatsoever saying "no public parking" or "private property", i mean, there can't be! It's a school-related building: public property!

Yet a few days ago, I found an orange slip on my windshield from the township police saying I had 48 hours to remove my car from the lot or it'd be impounded and I'd have to pay fees for the impound.

Can they do this? Should I complain to the board/police station? I feel this is a major infringement on my rights, and if I'm supporting the continuation of my town's school district with the money I work hard for, shouldn't I be able to park my car in that lot?

I can understand if people were prowling around on the lot late at night, but I don't do that. Any suggestions on what I should do?

c'mon. Save the sales pitch. You are parked illegally in a lot. They have asked you not to park there.

You know what comes next.

Either talk to the district about getting some kind of permit; or park elsewhere.

Find out why. In many cities, a vehicle that doesn't move for a few days is presumed abandoned and towed away. It might have nothing to do with the parking lot. Call the local cops and ask.

Regardless of the fact your tax money was used to build the lot, it is not public parking. How about clearing up some of the congestion in your driveway and that would solve this problem. Even tho there are no signs, you have now been told you cannot park there. Now you have to move it or face the fees for towing and impoundment. Sorry it is not your right to park wherever you feel like.

David save your liberal hippie rant and move your car. Schools may be funded by YOUR tax dollars BUT schools are private institutions that do not fall under the catogory of being municpal property that you can enter and exit at your own free will. If you don't like how your tax dollars are spent then move somewhere that spends the money in a manner that you agree with. Would you like some kleenex buddy?

Move your car.
