It is possible you could open the account with the fake SSN, then put your money in there, when you tried to get the money out, the bank will ask for your ID, when the ID doesnt' match the fake SSN..........your money is lost to you.....get a legitimate SSN

yes it is a felony, you could be charged with id theft, fraud, probably a bunch of other stuff. and why would you? because that means that the account really legally isn't yours

Banks ask for your Social only because it is easier for them to establish and service your account. I don't blame you for not wanting to donate your Social Security to anyone but your employer. For this reason it is easy to say that your attorney has suggested that you not give your Social to anyone who is not hiring you for a job. If they insist , just say"sorry I guess we can't do any business today, please cancel my account." Then thank them for their time and try another bank, you'll be glad you did!

Why would you want to?

If you ever had a problem and had to prove your identity, you wouldn't be able to prove your SSN.

I know it's a felony if illegal immigrants forge their paperwork.

Yes it is illegal to give a bogus SSN. With the US Patriot act now. You just cannot do that. The bank needs to prove that you are, who you are. I worked in a bank for about 3 years. If you do something like that. Once they put you through a Bank Credit company called Chex systems they can find out that your lying. So, I don't advise you doing that. You need two forms of id now. A government photo id, and a SSN (Card). Best of luck to you!

I don't recommend it. It is illegal to use someone elses
SS#. Some people do check their SS records to see
if they are correct. They would notice irregularities.
If they report it, you can expect a call from a Federal
Agent.

Yes it is illegal to make one up. Anything on comps can be tracked down. If that SSN matches w/ someone else's, you could get in to a LOT of trouble for making one up. What happened to yours ? Did you lose your card or you just forgot it ? I don't know where my card is but lucky for me I have places where I can call to ask them what my SSN is. Good luck.

For starters, the IRS would have fun with you when there was unreportable income. Money laundering is a crime and you look suspicious, among other things. Remember those words, "Um, my hand was in the wrong spot on the keyboard when I typed it."

tax laws, next they are going to run your credit to see if you can even have an account. If you give them a fake number it won't match so they will most likely refuse your account

I find it interesting that you didn't get one as an infant. That has been required for about 40 years.

And Ya it would definitely be illegal. The three segments for the social security all mean something. The first 3 digits are the state to received it from, I don't know the others.
