My father has not been around my whole life. He did pay child support to my mother till I was 18. I am now in college and would like to see if I have any options to get him to help me out. I heard that he legally has to pay half or something. If anyone can help me out that would be great thank you.

Read the court order on support. It will state whether he has further obligations to you or to your mother.
If the court order does not specify any conditions to extend support beyond your 18th birthday, he has no further obligation. |

Your case is rather odd, since most deadbeat parents (and there are many moms in that #), STOP paying when the kid turns 18. However, though most of the people before me answered correctly, you MIGHT be able to make a case on your own for back child support, if your mom is not willing to take him to court.
The best thing you can do is find a good lawyer. Also, check with the lawyer who handled your parents' divorce (your mom would need to sign a permission or "waiver" for him/her to speak to you), regarding any other stipulations, like college, medical or other payments to be made, that were not.

Try contacting him and talk it out first.
I'm sure he will be willing to help.
I doubt that your father has been away because of you, usually the parents have problems between the two of them.
So talk to him one on one. Good Luck |

No he doesn't. You are a legal adult and even as a student the only money you would have available to you is what your mother gives you. She can sue him for any money he is delinquent on, but no one can force him to pay for college. Unless otherwise stipulated in the court order , which is highly unlikely. |

Your mother is the only one who can go for back child support. As to paying for college that would have to have been stipulated in a court order. No court order then no way to force him to pay now. |

He has no legal responsibility for you after the age of 18 unless it is stipulated in the divorce that he is to help with your college expenses. If that isn't the case,you are on your own. |

You would have to see what the child support papers said when they determined the custody of you. If it is not in the papers that your dad has to pay for half your college education then he does not have to. Since you are over 18 and college is not mandatory to attend you would not be oligated to receive money from your father. |

It depends on your parents divorce decree or other signed court documents. If it states in there that he has to then he can be taken to court for contempt, if not then he can't. What a creep, even a few hundred a year can help. |
