If Alcohol is legal, why dont they legalize Marrijuana and Cocaine?
Find answers to your legal question.

If Alcohol is legal, why dont they legalize Marrijuana and Cocaine?

As an Alcoholic I know Alcohol is much worse! I used to take Crack or Coke because then I could drink more without becoming wasted too quickly. If I wanted to stop drinking but I was craving Alcohol, a Joint would reduce the cravings and prevent me from getting more drunk! If Marijuana and Cocaine can help problem drinkers, why arent they legal?

Excellent question. Alcohol should be illegal but it's too late now. (Furthermore, in my experience, alcohol induces violent tenancies in some people whereas cannabis is soporific.)

Lulabelle says "There's nothing in alcohol that causes addiction"! What a moron.

you addiction is being fueled by the substances you want legalised, and if your the target market, its easy to understand why they dont legalise it

just what we think
Well, well, dont we have the urban myths and propaganda going on this one this morning!!

The reasons are complicated and mulifold. One is cultural. Alcohol is the european drug of choice. Our lawmakers are mostly what? European?

Marijuana and cocaine would compete with proscription drugs. Do you know what kind of money and pressure they use to keep them illegal?

We are also fighting 50 years of political propaganda based on absolutly no scientific evidence at all. It has been going on so long everybody but a few now believe it as fact.

Being natural has nothing to do with it. Cocaine is a natural plant extract. There are also plenty of natrual plant extracts that will kill you in several heartbeats.

And the governmaent can make plenty of money on it. Just because its east to grow doesnt mean it cant be taxed and reulated. Alcohol is very easy to make, thousands make their own beer and wine everyday. Most go to the store though and pay the taxs cause its easier.

Do they muck ya up some? SURE! That why they do it. Same thing with alcohol. Are they addictive? Probly more psycological than physical like alcohol and heroin.

Are we stopping it by putting people in jail? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And we never will. We have 1 person in every 100 in prison now (more than any other country in the world), many due to non-violent drug use. This isnt the way to handle it. Decriminalize it, regulate it, tax it. Use the money in taxes to educate and rehabilitate. Not in law enforcment and supporting a burgoning prison population

Coca leaves have been chewed by the central and south ameriican indians for thousands of years too

mr nice guy
when you think about it marijuana is a herb that mother nature allowed to grow to benefit mankind. How can a plant be made illegal?
alcohol is man made and it causes more deaths than dope so your q.is valid.
i am not to sure about cocain though because some aspects of it are man made.

Good Question. If drugs were legalised there would be no more dealers and less drug related crime.

Mordent
Alcohol is drunk by 99% of people, and has been around for thousands of years. Cocaine is taken by a much much smaller percentage and has only been in the west for about 200 years. Alcohol (and its abuse) is accepted by society, wheras other drugs are not. If we were to evaluate each drug seperately then things like ecstasy and cannabis would barely even register compared to life destroying drugs like heroin, nicoteine and alcohol.

Other reasons why alcohol is legal is that 1) it makes absolutely LOADS of money from taxation - just look at the recent budget 2) the companies who make money from it are very powerful, and employ a lot of people. No government wants to annoy them 3) people are going to want to drink. You can't stop them. Prohibition simply did not work in the US, it was a complete abject failure.

So if we can't ban all drugs effectively then the next best step is to make all (or most) drugs legal and tax them and use that money to help repair the damage caused.

Kaos
The question is do you think you could of used your money more wisely and what are you running from...

I agree alchol is way worse than all others but I do not agree that coke is better. The chemicals in that make chemical imbalances in your brain that make pycho's everywhere on the earth. and mixed with alchol is just a bad idea..

I am not talking out my as* as I have done all but I always thought it was a waste of money drinking while on coke, I only used it when I was younger so when I stacked on skateboards it would not hurt as much and make me try stunts I would never think of without it.

Speed would make me go for hours and hours on end in bed...

I only smoke now and drink every now and then as I regret doing it all as I am a military historian and it makes it harder to remember dates...

I don't understand why advising Problem drinkers to take marijuana and coke is your answer. It defeats the purpose of the word 'help'.

One drug substitution for another drug is not the answer...

I am stoned so could'nt really care less. It's your life and the unfullfilment of your dreams are your problem...

Good luck to ya mate...

The underlying issue is the same as that underlying such controversies as
Right to death with dignity
Right to choose whether to develop or terminate a possible pregnancy
Right to use unorthodox medical treatments
and many other "consensual" or "victimless" crimes.

Some people believe that the power of government is (theoretically) strictly limited, that the government can legitimately interfere in our personal choices ONLY if those choices are infringing on the rights of other in a direct way. For example, the government can ban smoking indoor because that behavior infringes on the right of people to choose to live a tobacco free life. However, the government may not interfere in the choice to use tobacco in your home. Adults have the right to take risks, to behave foolishly, even recklessly so long as their behavior isn't directly violating the rights of others.

Legalization of marijuana would open up that whole can or worms, discussions of whether ANY drug prohibitions are Constitutional. Prior to the Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914 people routinely had tinctures of opium and cocaine in their homes to treat a variety of ills -- it was as ordinary as using ibuprufin or aspirin. Then HeyPresto! with the stroke of a pen (bill signed into law) people suddenly needed to pay a member of the AMA for a permission slip to buy these common medications. And a Black Market was born.

Now there are a lot of grey areas like whether rights are being violated when a smoker (tobacco or marijuana) has children in the home being exposed to the behavior. But if Americans start seriously challenging ALL the laws that are based on "moral disappoval" or "indirect violation of rights", then we'll be questioning laws like gambling prohibitions, polygamy prohibitions, and so on.

Personally, I think the laws dealing with mind altering substances are far, far too lax. I'm amazed and appalled each time I see a 10 year old buy a bottle of Mountain Dew (more caffeine than 4 cups of coffee!); should this kid have to be at least old enough to buy tobacco and alcohol to buy that kind of drug laden "soft" drink? I'm flabbergasted that we sell alcohol and tobacco in grocery stores where children are allowed, that we show our children these are just ordinary "groceries" like bread, soap, and raisins instead of segregating these very special products to special stores. Do we, as a society, truly believe we should be teaching out kids that mind altering substances like tobacco and alcohol are just "ordinary" groceries?

If I had kids at home and I KNEW it would keep them away from alcohol and tobacco, I'd BUY their marijuana for them and roll it into "joints" for them too! No one has EVER died from a marijuana overdose and a whole generation of hippies spent years trying.

They're illegal, most likely, because they cant control the production or distribution of it. If they could, they wouldn't have a problem with people hurting themselves.

Their official stance however is that the top 3 drugs abused are also legal, so why make more drugs legal.

They can't make money off it, so no incentive. In my opinion.

But you need help. Don't take drugs so you can do more of another drug. Thats just stupid

I beg to differ.

the strain on the NHS is already starting to bite,
since people were under the misconception that as Marijuana was down-graded ( to a class C drug it ) was therefore legal, now.
marijuana can & does cause mental health problems in regular/moderate ( or occasional ) users.
you will only be replacing one addiction for another.
cocaine should NEVER become legal, it interferes with the pleasure-receptors of the brain & can render a habitual user NUMB to all ( including natural ) highs, eventually.
& besides people DIE to get that 15 min high to coke-heads.
is it worth it?
NOT TO ME.
I think as alcohol is a drug, it should be under stricter regulation to prevent people becoming alcohol dependent in the first place.
blame the goverment, they've made a packet from addicts.

It`s bad enough trying to stop yobs killing people on alcohol [I know some are on drugs but is illegal] you can have a joint in your own home, if it is made legal where could you smoke it? there is a smoking ban in public places you know, what do you mix blow with when you roll a joint? Err! let me think, oh ye, TOBBACCO!
KILL_Yr_
Could you explain how you know marijuana hasn`t killed anyone, what do you use with yours to make a joint? When marijuana isn`t taking effect anymore that`s when people try stronger stuff then stronger than that, drugs should not be legalised, any of them

i agree with ginny gin. people dont smoke cannibis and smash the place up, hit their partners and make other peoples lives a misery.
Having said that all mind altering drugs should be against the law and alchohol should be banned as well!

Luli
Alcohol is not harmful and maybe even good for you in small amounts.

Also, there is nothing in alcohol thats causes addiction - it is the addictive personality of the individual thats creates an alcoholic.

Things like marrijuana and cocaine are never good for you, are harmful in small doses with immediate permenant effects and contain addictive chemicals.
