You go through the local cell system and to the 9-1-1 operations center. It is helpful though if the 9-1-1 operators have a clue to the boundaries to their operations area.

In fact, if your line is temporarily disconnected for non-payment, the FCC mandates that YOUR 9-1-1 call must be carried through to Emergency services.

With my phone with a 928 area number (AZ outside of PHX) and visiting the Dallas Metroplex, I get a local 9-1-1 operator (adjusted for local jurisdiction) in Grand Prairie, Irving, Oak Cliff, Fort Worth or Dallas itself based upon the tower triangulation to my location.

Case in point:
I live 45 miles west of the PHX metroplex and work just north of Goodyear AZ. My job site has Maricopa County Sheriff's for response while just across the arroyo (dried up creek) at Millennium High School, the City of Goodyear is supposed to respond. The closest cell tower (in Goodyear) directs my calls to the Goodyear EMS center so I have to be manually transferred to the County Sheriff's dispatchers.

I drive home through 6 municipalities and 1 county (non-incorporated areas), I always make sure that I know where I am (mile marker or cross streets, etc...) because it does make a difference in response.
I have called for a police and EMS response within 50 yards outside Luke AFB's north gate and been directed to the ON base EMS dispatch then been redirected to the Glendale center. The base still have paramedics respond (one of the injured was an Airman) even though Glendale 'had the ball'.

I live on my cell phone and do security so knowing this stuff CAN save my BUTT

911 automatically goes to the nearest emergency response station. So it doesn't matter where you call from, it will always go to the nearest station.

When you are using a cell phone, the 911 call goes to the closest 911 dispatcher to the closest cell phone tower to where the call is made. You should always tell the dispatcher your exact location, or the location of the emergency first when using a cell phone, though, because if your dispatcher is 'busy' the call goes outward until a 911 dispatcher answers. The dispatchers are 'patched' though so the call can be immediately transferred to the appropriate area.

the 911 system traces your call so they know exactly where you are in case you are choking or your assailant hangs the phone up before you can speak.
i dont know about your cell phone but mine has an emergency location feature that i can turn on and off so they can know where i am when i call

it depends...
if you are in ur hometown- it should go through to ur local 911 operator
however if ur in another town or state, it mite still send your call to ur hometown, but the 911 operator can quickly transfer you to the right operator for the town you are in!

i think it depends on what radio tower youre near or something. it just sends it to the nearest one.

your cellphone has to connect to a tower that sends your signal on, so I'm pretty sure you'll get the right 911 central - besides, they can always just transfer you, not like they'll hang up on you.

if it is on you cell it will go to the closes 911 associated with your cell number here in cali.

if you call from a land line it will go to the 911 closes to that phone

if a 911 call is made on a cell phone it will direct you to the nearest emergency station.some phones have a location option that you can turn on and off.if it's on, 911 offices can trace your call by GPS and see where you are. if you turn it off, no one will be able to see your location without your permission except 911..some offices that are not up to date might not be able to trace your call with location off.

I think it automatically connects you to your local 911 office by your area code.

Every state, depending on square mile size, have 1 or multiple '911' call centers. Each call center has access to local emergency services, therefore, you will NOT get someone in a neighboring state answering your 911 call. However, I'm not really sure what happens when you use your cell phone and be traveling...... call the local police department and ask them............
