A local church is apparently renting school facilities on the weekends and hanging a huge sign on the schools sign to advertise. I called to file a complaint and they told me it's legal because they rent the facilities. They informed me that they rent it to everyone equally and they can all advertise. Now I usually tend to keep the policy of to each their own but I'm an atheist and I gurantee you if I rented it and advertised an atheist meeting I would be shot down in one minute of it being up. Any ideas?
Additional Details
The school is public, and if they maybe put a sign on the grounds I might not be annoyed but they're putting a banner OVER the schools sign, we're talking a 5' x 3' sign. So it looks like the school is endorsing them not renting to them.

If the school does rent to others, and allows them to advertise (announce) their presence for the meeting, they can NOT discriminate against the church doing so. That is also a violation. Neither can they refuse to rent to a religious body, based on religious viewpoint. Again, that is discriminatory.
You say you would be shot down if you rented a room and advertised an atheist meeting. Don't know until you try it. If you do get shot down, THEN you have a case of discrimination. Hold a Free Thinkers Association meeting and see what happens. |

The church has a right to advertise as would you. But, you seem somewhat ignorant though if you don't mind me saying, because the first amendment of the US Constitution goes both ways: others have a right to free expression (or right to advertise) and if you don't like it, simply ignore it. The KKK conducts a march in a town close to mine and even though I detest their ideals, as long as they get a permit and assemble in a peaceful fashion, they're entitled to express themselves. Freedom lies in letting someone do something (lawfully) that you wouldn't agree with, such as religion, cultural acts, etc.

Is the school private or public? Private property has a much wider range of options than a public school might.
I think its confusing to have the church's sign ON the school sign. That clearly gives the impression that the school somehow sanctions and is related to the church. As a community member I would oppose this for any organization. |
