Punishing killing by killing makes perfect sense.
These people do not deserve to be amongst the living. |

Punish killing by more killing? Makes no sense.
Also, the margin for state error to execute an innocent person is too great for my comfort. |

No because then the person hasn't learned anything. If someone kills another person and you kill them that is just hypocritical. And what do you learn from hypocrites? Absolutely nothing. Plus it is inhuman.
Personally, I believe they should be locked up in jail for life unless it were an accident. |

I don't think anybody deserves the death penalty. |

surprisingly countries with death penalty have higher murder rates, therefore it is not a deterrent. If I killed somewhat and thought I would be executed if caught, then I'm gonna kill more people to avoid capture! So no. |

You don't have to sympathize with criminals or want them to avoid a terrible punishment to ask if the death penalty prevents or even reduces crime and to think about the risks of executing innocent people. Your question is much too important to settle without thinking about these.
126 people on death rows have been released with proof that they were wrongfully convicted. DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides and isn’t a guarantee we won’t execute innocent people.
The death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder. No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in those that don’t.
We have a good alternative. Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. It is sure and swift and rarely appealed. Life without parole is less expensive than the death penalty.
The death penalty costs much more than life in prison, mostly because of the legal process which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people.
The death penalty isn't reserved for the worst crimes, but for defendants with the worst lawyers. It doesn't apply to people with money. When is the last time a wealthy person was on death row, let alone executed?
The death penalty doesn't necessarily help families of murder victims. Murder victim family members across the country argue that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.
Problems with speeding up the process. Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person. |

yes absolutely. Death is deserved for one who takes life, but can one who is pure of heart take the life of another?
I believe that punitive violence makes a murderer and a thug out of the state, and that state-sanctioned murder is no more moral than personally-motivated murder. Except for in a country where a country cannot afford to house innmates, i am dead- against the death penalty, and believe that anyone involved with it to be in an immoral act. The philosophy of a jail must be to protect the outside world from the offender, if we legitimate retributive justice we become complicit to the evil revenge brings.
It is also advantageous i believe, to note, that countries with the death penalty have higher rates of violent crime, this to me is a case of teaching people that retributive violence is a good thing, how can we not expect to have a violent and murderous society when ones own legal system sanctions and endorses murder? |

The death penalty itself is a murder. So to answer that question an individual would have to first be aware of that fact. However... I personally do not think the death penalty should ever be used. It would make more sense to ship the individual who committed murder out of the country and never allow him/her to return. Surely some other country would deal with them. |

the murderer deserves some kind of punishment, but not death. no one really deserves death and we don't really have the right to end someone's life. us killing the murderer would make us hypocrites. i mean how can we convince people that murder is wrong, if our own govt or w/e does it. it would give the victims' families justice, but if the murderer was put in jail or something they would know that he/she is getting what they deserve and has time to think about the pain they've caused. plus, if everyone who murdered has to be put to death, wouldn't people kill even more? because they know no matter how many people they kill, their punishment can't go any further than the death penalty. i'd rather have the murderer learn his/her lesson and come out as a better person. if not, then he/she would've wasted their life behind bars. their loss, not ours. idk. that's just my opinion. If it was in Roman times yes, if someone kills another, then that person has the right of retaliation and can kill him back (legally) |

nope. death penalty is not a deterrant for people with a 'sick mind' or people that are acting in the heat of the moment.
besides, in my opinion, it's better to catch them and study what their 'triggers' are to make them do that, so we know, as a society, who is more prone to be a killer and take positive intervention steps earlier in their life.
i'm not really a do-gooder, but i think killing someone in retaliation to them killing someone else is completely pointless and makes the law, no better than the killer. |

No I am against the death penalty.
2 wrongs do not make a right.
Not to mention in most cases when murder is involved, the victim didn't know it was going to happen.
When you sentence a man to death they appeal it for many years, and sit in their cell knowing they are going to die.
Imagine how torturous that is. I don't believe the death penalty is fair, in the sense you are basically taunting up until their time of death.
Imagine how you would feel walking to the lethal injection room and laying on that table. You would want to puke, that is not cool to mess with someones head like that.
I understand what they did was horrible and got them there, but I still feel that is a very bad way to punish someone.
If you want them punished to death then ok, but you should just randomly shoot them in their sleep....
not make them dwell on their impending death for many many months or years. |
