If a musician fails to find alternative booking following a cancellation am i liable to pay full amount?

I had a band booked to play at my wedding. my wedding was then cancelled so i cancelled the band. my contract did not mention cancellation at all yet now i'm being threatened with legal action from promoter to pay half the orig cost (£500) as apparently "the Musicians Union and Equity states that if a performer fails to find a substitute venue then the full amount is due to the band". Do i have to pay, even though they already have my £200 deposit?

Depends on the language of the contract.

As a 'general' rule, unless there's language to the contrary in the contract itself, then if you breach the contract you're liable to the other party for their damages. If they couldn't get another gig then that could indeed be the full cost that you were obligated to pay.

In your case sweetie. I would make your selfish fiance foot the bill. He is the one who called off the wedding!!!!!! Why should you or your parents foot the bill for him.

I know you are taking the whole thing 'well' . But look at the bigger picture.......he has humiliated you in front of everyone. I for one couldn't forgive that, and certainly could not just 'continue as normal' with him. You have been with him for 10 years and deserve more respect than what he has shown you. Cancelling the wedding 8 weeks out is not a form of respect.

He should suffer the consequences of paying for the band that was booked. He should also reimburse your parents for all the money they paid for deposits on things.

I would get a lawyer.
