If someone tries to assault you unarmed you don't have the right to defend yourself with a weapon. If you were better armed than your attacker you might be charged with using excessive force. These scenarios are assuming that your attacker and yourself are physically comparable. If a physically inferior victim defends themselves with a slightly superior weapon a court will consider it self-defense. The ultimate question is not that you felt your life was in danger, it's whether you can convince a court that it was.
