As a matter of law, there is no justification to use force to counter a strictly verbal threat that's not accompanied by an overt act that forces you to defend against that physical act, like a display of a weapon. And a threat of future assault is no assault at all, unless it's particularly worded with the intent to accomplish specific things that I would have to know your state's laws to comment on.

If someone attacks you physically, then you have the right to defend yourself, but not beat the living crap out of someone. That is assault and battery, and a criminal offence.

If someone attacks you verbally, and you retaliate physically, that is assault and battery, and a criminal offence.

If you threaten to attack someone physically, that is assault, and a criminal offence.

There is no excuse for violence. Retaliating violently just perpetuates the problem. Sure, self defence is necessary sometimes, but it should only be self defence. That is, with the intention to get away, not hurt someone.

just do it! jK....yes, you would get in trouble, you can only defend yourself if they hit you physically. If they are just threatening you, the law says you have to walk away, if you hit them first, you are at fault.

you can defend yourself from being assaulted physically. Check your states law defining assault and the guidelins for using force to defend yourself.

If they're in your face and they're threatening you as long as you can take them, go ahead. Just tell the cops/principal how they were threatening you and you felt like it was your safest bet to knock him out. lol

If someone tries to hurt you (physically) or something, err, 'disgusting', you're aloud to use self defense on them (eg. karate).
