saying that you're addicted to drugs and are incapable of watching your own children, is that slander?

my step dad and mom are getting a divorce, and he sent a letter saying that she was addicted to drugs and he was concerned for the safety of my younger half brother and sister..... now if children's safety was in the question, wouldn't my safety be in the question too. Also my mom doesn't do drugs, so is what he's doing illigeal?

yes, provided that it is indeed untrue and that those who received the letter believed it.
it is possible that he knows something that you dont.

Yes that is slander. Depending on where you live laws differ, but since they are divorcing things are gonna get nasty so she will probably still have to answer these allegations, and possibly submit to drug testing. Also if he submitted that statement in a court document it is also perjury, which can carry very hefty fines/sentences. He probably didn't mention you because you aren't his child, and he won't be fighting for custody of you. Good luck to your mom!

Love Canada is correct. Libel is the term you are looking for. If I were her I would show it to my attorney. He might have the answers.
