If there are less guns available in the USA wouldn't there be less illegal guns?

There would likely be more illegal guns, not less. The same amount of people will still want guns, regardless of the demand. If a criminal wants a gun, they will get one, legal or not.

the unavailability of legal guns would only bring a rise in illegal guns. didn't you learn anything from the war on drugs (because America hasn't). but of course, thos elaw abiding citizens would become defenseless against the illegally armed "bad guys"

If there were fewer guns, in total, you have to count guns owned legally and guns owned illegally. If some people owned fewer legal guns, that doesn't compel people owning illegal guns to relinquish any.

I think it's better to shoot for fewer criminals, not fewer guns. (pun intended)

Drugs are TOTALLY illegal and the amount of drugs in this country is steadily growing. Taking things away from LAW ABIDING people doesn't solve any problems.... So no the amount of illegal firearms would rise.

As long as there are criminals, there will be illegal guns. The US war on drugs, and prohibition is a great example; they only kept substances from law abiding citizens. If a criminal wants crack, he can get it.

To attempt to reduce the amount of illegal firearms by passing a law that makes more of them illegal, in an attempt to lower crime even sounds silly.

No. All the guns that are accessible illegally in the United States come from the black market, ie, south of the border. Criminals cant get their guns legally simply because they need background checks to purchase them. Illegal guns are purchased just like illegal drugs

Not at first but over time, yes.
You at least did not call for a total ban. Just restrictions.
I see no need for everybody to be walking around packing pistols.
At the same time I see no problem with legitimate owners.
The question that should be asked of potential pistol buyers is not "Are you Nuts" but "Why do you want a pistol."

In my country you need to have a valid reason for one, show that you can store it safely and follow transportation rules.
It does not mean you have the right to be packing a .45 in a bar while getting drunk and stoned.

We still have problems with illegal pistols.

Most of our illegal pistols are smuggled in from USA.
Most of them are purchased from proper gun dealers in the states.
The original buyers are often fake IDs, making the guns basically untraceable. We have relatively few problems with long guns.
