I don't believe in god and I always take the affirmation when I'm in Court.

'I do solemnly swear and affirm that the evidence I shall give will be the true the whole true and nothing but the truth'

However, should you practice a particular faith, your particular holy book should be available. E.g the Koran etc

You don't swear it on anything, you affirm that you will tell the truth under penalty of perjury. (BTW, in most courts even if you use the "so help me God" language, there is no bible in the courtroom, you just raise your hand and swear.)

The court usher will give you the option of two formal declarations to read out.

One begins, "I swear by almighty God..."
The other begins, "I solemnly affirm that I shall..."

The choice is yours which one you read out.

maraesa1000
nothing to do with god. just an oath to tell the truth so that they can extend your sentence if they catch you lying

Foghorn
In England, one can Affirm on one's honour. No God need come into it.

I served on a jury a couple of years ago. I took an affirmation promising to consider the facts fairly or words to that affect. The words were written on a card and I just read them aloud.

Bibles and/or religion aren't used in most court rooms anymore. You will asked to raise your write hand and swear to tell the truth without any religious overtones.

I think now courts just ask you to raise your right hand and swear to tell the truth so help you, without the bible or the God part

Massive Mann
You answer the question " I'm an Athiest" that ends the conversation. You swear on your own word what you say is true

The Alchemist
I don't need to swear on anything except my word. Its worth gold to me. It takes a lifetime to build a good reputation and 2 seconds to wipe it out. I might as well be putting my hand on a cookbook.

A lot of courts have the Koran and a few others these days. No Sky Sports/Rothman's Football Yearbook yet though :-(

Redberry
I presume you can swear on something like UK Law. Just call to the court and ask them.

Even though I am a Christian and believe in God I don't think you have to swear an oath on the bible anymore.A Muslim was recently sworn into Congress using the qua ran.So I think if you believe in Dr.Seuss you can probably request to be sworn in using "Green Eggs and Ham"instead of the Holy Bible.Or maybe if your a scientologist you can demand to use a book by L.Ron Hubbard to be sworn in by.After all it's only fair since they pandered to someone elses specific relegious beleifs instead of what America stands for I guess we don't stand for anything anymore or beleive in anything and so anybody should be able to promise to be honest and tell the truth using whatever book it is they worship.
