If you could make anything legal or illegal what would it be?

I would probably want to drop the laws against possession of marijuana. I have no desire to use it personally, nor do I even think it's a good idea for others. But I hate to think that people get a criminal record for it that could mess up their employment opportunities for life, while people are free to smoke cigarettes with legal impunity. And I'd rather see my tax dollars being spent on research or helping the homeless or pursuing dangerous criminals. There are already laws to cover impaired driving and the like that could be applied to people who are high at inappropriate times.

As for making something illegal, I'd ban the death penalty because I don't think it's a better deterrent than life in prison, it's more expensive overall, and it's applied most often to poor, uneducated people. And also I believe that the taking of a human life defiles the killer (the executioner in this case) and everyone else who was complicit in the act...which is all of us if we don't object. There are unfortunate times when someone has to be killed to keep others safe, but after they're in a high security prison is not one of those times.

Edited to add: I'm working on the assumption that I'm only allowed to change my own country's laws here. If I could change ANY country's laws, I'd pick a country where the laws are way more draconian.

I would make cellphones while driving illegal because I almost died from some idiot driving with a cellphone. he was typing in a number and went through a red light, hit 2 cars, and then hit us. It was us spin around. We were in a van. I was in the seat that got hit. My sister made me move, before we left.

legal would be that if a family member is sent to foster care first they should have to call the grandparents or aunts before placing the child with people they don't know.

illegal this is so easy i would make alcohol illegal all it does is bad nothing good ever comes from drinking.. it causes wrecks fights marriages to end etc i hate it..

i would make my husband from honduras legal without having to pay all the crazy expensive so called application fees to get him back here from honduras! and i would make it illegeal to get divorced that way people would thimk about things harder before they got married.

Legal: weed because it proves to be safer than when someone is drunk, and less imparing like in motor skills but also think about this. When was the last time a stoner tried to beat you up for looking at his girlfriend funny? And it is way way way less addicting and harmful than cigarettes.

Illegal: smoking in public places. Its kinda pointless to outlaw tobbacco because then it will turn into another illegal drug that is untaxed and smuggled and causes crime to go up. But if it was outlawed in most public places with maybe the exception to like a smoking bar or some other designated smoking place, then we don't have to worry about 2nd hand smoke and how it irritates peoples eyes or nose but they can still do there own thing, just away from me.

I'd make cigarettes illegal, because I smoke...but then that woyuld make me a criminial for doing something the government's been making money on for years, and I'd probably descend into the underworld in order to get a 'hit'.

Legal? Drugs. Legitimize them. It's a double standard to criminalize certain drugs while making squillions out of the two most dangerous ones.

I'd also make mega-churches illegal. If churches want tax-exempt status they have to prove they are giving their money to the poor and needy rather than building mansions and living off the spiritual rape of their followers.

Duh....make marijuana legal! It's harmless in comparison to cigarettes, and if it's not illegal anymore, then police can focus on catching real criminals.
