One of the last powers that people have is economic. Boycotting a company because it is doing something wrong really wakes up the management and stockholders. It's a great move, but too many people are lazy or don't care until there is a real crisis.
I not only boycott, but sometimes I threaten them with going public and spreading the bad news about them. Despite what they claim, most worship the dollar and when you hit them there they start to take notice. |

No. I haven't shopped in Tesco or the like for years because they are destroying independant high street shops. |

Absolutely not, nor will I shop at a store or buy products from a place that mistreats their employees. That's why I never shop at Wal-Mart. If more people would stand up for the little guy and the small communities by not buying products, these companies would stop their bad business practices. |

No way. If you have that type of knowledge, so should the rest of the community surrounding the company. If you are not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Make phone calls, write letters, do what you need to do to ensure to safety of your community. |

I do my best not to purchase a product that is detremental to communities etc.. But is nearly impossible since all major corparations do whatever they can get away with. |

I try not to...but nowadays with all you hear it is pretty hard to do so.
I make my best efforts to always buy local, fair trade and Canadian (I'm Canadian) but it is not always feisable. It is however, my first priority when shopping as opposed to price or convenience. |

No, I don't shop at Tesco or Asda (Walmart) I never used to buy S.African products (years ago) including anthracite coal - my coalman had a conscience and always used to tell you where products originated.Unfortunately my local farm shop and butchers have just gone out of business due to the pressure of supermarkets. Annoys me intensely as they used to deliver free and as I'm disabled and just had my driving licence revoked it's becoming increasingly difficult to not use their like(supermarkets) because of the delivery service. |

NO! i would not. i think we should all be carefull not to suport pointless destruction of comunities for proffit of any kind. the trouble is though, since new labour got in power we live in a culture of lies and deception. and ive noticed that two! fair trade products ive brought were not! in fact fair trade at all. just using clever word play. be particularly carefull when buying chocolate products. or summer wear. |

i'm addicted to coca-cola.... I admit it...I have a problem.
I probably drink about a case per week....
If you would have said any other product besides coke...I would have said yes... but truthfully ...I have to have my coca-cola.. or i'll be miserable. |

No I wouldn't and this is where all those with money to spend are empowered in a way denied by our government. The concept of political spending has been around for a long time. |
|

|
no i wouldn't - but like insanity and greatness - hardship is relative.
first i would want to know what the problem was IE -(a) is the company poisoning the local water - extremely important or (b) does the company want people to work on Sundays which interferes with going to church - not important at all.
i would want to know that the info is the truth - not just another media hype
you left the question a bit open .
is the q just theoretical or-
could you please come back and tell us what the hardship is - the truth - no rumours please |

Yes. But dont get me wrong, it's only because i don't care about the community. |

I would try not to but it is hard not to as generally the big, evil company would have an established product for convenience.
An example is Tesco.
We all know what damage they have done to the world and its people however we continue to shop there for the convenience and cheap prices. |
|

justin
|
yes i would because one person not buying the product would not really make a difference when they have got lots of other customers buying it. i think the only way of making a difference is by going and talking to the manager or writing a letter.
hope i have helped. |

What standard would you consider to be fair in determining the point to where a "hardship" can no longer be tolerated?
Example:
120,000 Accidental deaths are caused by medical malpractice in U.S. each year. (average)
There are 700,000 physicians practicing int the U.S.
Not counting suicides*, there are 12,819 deaths which result from gun violence in the U.S. each year. (average)
There are 80 million gun owners in the U.S.
According to these statistics, you are 1,070 times more likely to be killed by a doctor than by a gun owner.**
My point is, according to your logic, before ANYONE can justify boycotting pro-gun corporations/businesses, you would ethically have to first boycott the heathcare system.
*Suicide by firearms account for around 16,000 deaths each year. This statistic was not counted, because the absence of the gun does not prevent suicide.
**Actually, there are only 1,500 ACCIDENTAL firearm deaths each year. It can be argued that in the absence of firearms, most other gun deaths would still occur, as the result of some other method of killing ie) knife, bludgening, poisoning, etc. This would mean that you are 9,165 times more likely to be killed by a doctor than by a firearm.
Where is the outrage? Let's boycott healthcare!!! (According to your philosophy) |
