If you saw someone shoplifting, would you tell the store staff?

tommy
i have and i did......its us who pick up the companies losses!

Blah
It would probably depend on the situation... it's one thing for a person in need who may be stealing a pack of diapers, than for a punk kid stealing an Ipod.
However, for the most part I would tell the staff.

I worked in retail for years and to be honest, it would depend on the situation and the attitude of the person, whether or not they would be arrested by the police or just given a tresspass warning.

Bartleby the Scrivener
Yes I would. The store has people relying upon its success for their livelihood. A large number of businesses that close up do so because of problems with shoplifting.

Stealing is wrong and it should be stopped. You are not doing anything wrong by telling someone, and you may be helping the thief, because if they get whatever is leading them to steal taken care of, they won't do it anymore.

you bet on it!

I did this only last week. Two teen girl's following their mother around the store--(whilst i was following them!)--opening up random packets from the biscuit and sweet aisles here and there and putting the contents in their pockets--nibbling a little of this, a little of that every so often, and leaving the empty packets on the shelves. On my way out after finishing my shopping, i told the security guard on duty at the cctv station--and he didn't even know how to pan the camera's around the store to find them, OR how to zoom in--i had to show him!! And yes--i would do this again--prices and costs go up because of these thieving pigs.

AngeleyesOddette...
Yes, especially as i work my *** of to buy the things i want, if shoplifters continue to steal and not get caught, then all us law abiding citizens pay for all they take, buy the increase of all goods....

I always tell staff if i see them steal....

TerenceG
Yes I would it is people like that who make the prices higher for honest people

Jason1982
Its wrong to shoplift but i would never tell the store staff , Its there job to catch you .

Some people shoplift for a living , how ever much is Stolen the big shops will never lose out , they make way to big profit in my mind ,

But hey say you had your own company would u want to lose money ? Dont think u would !

Ill tell the truth if i had my own company i would just install CCTV , but when someone us caught i would just sit them down and talk to them and not get the police involded , Sometimes people just need some Guidence and i would try help them best i can . If thats given them 500.00 then so be it . If your maken 2Million a year whats 500.00 every now and then to company with so much money , 500.00 can go along way to getting someone on the right tracks in life ,

as long as 500 is spend in right way then ill be happy to give them it the once only

Yes I would, without a doubt!!! Theft from shops/stores increase the price of goods!!

I Bleed Black & Gold
depends! that would be the right thing to do.but if a mother was down on her luck and stealing food or formula for her baby then no i wouldn't.

Professor
It is wrong to steal. I would snitch on a shop lifter

honeypot

Nah, I have got better things to do with my time, plus people have to learn from their mistakes. If they get caught they cant improve on their future profession.

I did once, in Boots the Chemists. Two girls were looking at lipsticks and passing them to each other. I saw one girl slip 4 lipsticks into her sleeve. While they were still in the shop, I asked an assistant if there was a security officer on duty. She said she would call the Manager. That person spoke to me and said 'If we don't actually see the offence, we cannot prosecute'. I offered to be their witness but they refused.

Now, this is what the Country is coming to. Let the criminals do what they like and we'll just put the prices up!

MARIE S
possibly if it was someone that looked like they were on drugs and were stealing too fuel that habit but not if it was someone that looked poor and had kids because i would feel sorry for them of course appearances can be deceptive but i am mostly a great judge of character

osama
i have seen both cases a young mother with some kids and a few chavs i was pretty sure the mother did not have a lot of money and she was acting susipicous but i probably would of helped her or paid for the goods if she was caught but on the other hand the chavs i got the secutity guards attention and he knew what was going on i hope they were caught

naplusultra
No they spy on us with cctv, they have security staff you would cross the road to avoid, Maybe if they paid £1000 for you to testify. Is not our problem.

Theft is wrong. However that is a black and white answer and life is mostly grey and red ! I have been tempted to shoplift medicine once for a tooth ache from a chemists and having absolutely no money at all. I didn't I looked into my soul and used my credit card to buy the medicine from the supermarket.
I would talk to the shop lifter. If they were stealing food or medicine they may not have a credit card and need help. Camaraderie I suppose when you have been there youself you can understand other peoples needs. Such a crying shame that the government cannot or do not give the helpless and blameless enough to live on.

Yes.

Theft is wrong. That's all there is to it. How can some people not understand that?

I would prefer to tell them to put it back

I have never seen this but I think that I would because we all have to pay for thieves.

Definitely. It's only honest people who will end up paying for the goods when the shops raise prices to cover pilfering costs if the theives aren't caught
.

I cant see how anyone as many here think that shoplifting is a victimless crime and the shops make enough money to cover it.The victims are the rest of us who pay more to cover losses. As far as I concerned I don't give a toss about the stores shareholders but I do resent paying for stolen goods.I would report them without a doubt and looking poor is no excuse.I would feel like an accessory to the crime

CheapGettingRich
Yes, I have told the store staff about an old, shoplifting lady.

The staff said that it would not be right to inspect the lady unless an employee makes the observation.

I do understand the staff because it could be a complete invasion of privacy.

KNOWALL
I did not know that you saw me !

Vegan
It depends on the store.

If the store sells any leather, fur, or meat, I let it go.

If they're exclusively vegetarian I'll tackle the person myself.
