If you have water restrictions in you area. Do you? Even if there is water restrictions it seems that car washes are always open. |

You should know if you are on water restriction. Go to your city's web site and check. |

I'm in California..It depends on what your city law is.. We go thru this every once in awhile and yes it can be illegal to wash your car, water your lawns, hose down your drive ways and so on.
But ..that is if you get caught. How many cops drive down your street everday.
I say just do it. and if you get busted its like a 50 dollar fine. |

It's not illegal to wash your car. It is illegal to use water outside. Your question is misleading. |

If you are asking if there is some statewide law that specifically covers all forms of car washing, the answer is no. If you want to know if your town or your water district has some prohibition of wasting water by letting it flow down the street, check with your town or your water district. |

It depends on if your specific town is currently under water restriction. You should check that out. |

How are we supposed to know? Yahoo! answers is world wide. How many people on here do you think live in the same area as you? And how would we even know if we did or not, as you didn't even tell us where you live? Narrowing it down to Florida does not help. Florida is a big place.
So how about doing your own research. Call up your city or county and ask what water restrictions are in place. Or Goge your city and go to their web site and read about water restrictions. |

I'm in Florida too. In my county theres specific days of the week you can use the water, and on those days you can wash your car. It's currently illegal to have public car washes for like fundraisers and stuff. It is legal though to go pay for a car wash at a business. |

well it just depend on where you're at. But if there is a drought and you're wasting water just to wash a car, then it being illegal make sense to me... |

hum i live in alberta and it is illegal but in british columbia it is legal. It is illegal for me because the soapy water goes into the drain which can harm animals and we use as our drinking water,...............it goes through a cleaning process |

We are under water restrictions and you can only use water certain days of the week. I don't know where you live but you can look it up on your cities web site. |

if you're in a drought, then it could be illegal, depending on what kind of water restrictions your city/state has during a drought. |

In some places it is true, Not only because of the drought, but in some other communities that are worried about the toxic run-off from washing your car.
Edit: I'm also from California.
Re-edit: it is true - see link |

It depends, if your under water restrictions there are probably certain times of the day where they limit water usage. Or you may be limited to where you can only use auto washes that recycle water. |

Depends, if you are just letting the water run down drains and not getting rid of it safely, letting it evaporate, and you may need to phone up your local council and ask them. |

It's weird to hear from someone without water restrictions ... but so is actually paying for water.
You should check with your city because you can be fined. |

I don't think it's illegal, but it certainly doesn't help the drought. |

I do know that in some cases, they prohibit you from doing any extra things like watering your lawn, if there is a shortage of water. They can fine you, but it isn't against the law. If you have a shortage, I would save your water supply. |
