I'm a low-wage worker too but I live at my parent's place since they live in Spain, so I'm very fortunate not to have to pay rent. Your situation must be difficult. I think the government should give every citizen money for food & shelter regardless of their situation (they can print as much money as they want after all) while imposing some regulations on prices to prevent inflation. In that way every cent you earned by working would go to higher needs like entertainment and luxuries. Why is it not done? I guess people in power like to keep us busy trying to satisfy our most basic needs.

Have you seen Sicko yet? You should this might help. In our country we have to pay out of our pockets for education, child care, medical insurance, and etc. In other countries their goverment pay for these things and has universal healthcare....which allows them to live more stressless lives and stay healthier and happier....So to answer you question..only the goverment can bring us relief. We all need to start demanding the help we deserve.

I'm in the same boat. My town has been on a building spree for the last year, and the lowest price - even for a 1,000 sq ft. condo is 200 grand. The only solution I can think of is that all of us blue collar workers move to a place like Montana where we can afford to live decently and work, and all the people left living in the non-affordable housing will be left with no fast food, no Wal-Mart, no pharmacies, no gas stations, no bank tellers, no pizza, no grocery stores, no house cleaners.........we're the ones who run their world, right? I'd love to see that happen to a town. Then and only then might we see some reform.

Get more credentials or job skills and live somewhere more affordable.

The solution is to not remain a low-wage worker. Low wage jobs are only entry level jobs. You are not supposed to remain in them. There is plenty of low cost housing. You might not like it but it exists.

There are plenty of jobs out there, find a new one. There are jobs that pay 11+ per hour without college.

Aren't you glad you asked? The idle middle class sitting at their computers getting fatter by the second have plenty of advice for you. None of it meaningful. Unfortunately everyone I've ever known who survived a situation like yours did it by sharing expenses. It's an uncomfortable situation, but gettting any and all government aid you can in addition to roomates is pretty much the only way to do it. If you can go to adult school and get some sort of additional training you should. But not all of us can and most of those trade schools are rip offs so be careful of that. So start looking for someone to share expenses with, live "at home" if you have one, or something along those lines. Good luck.

Depending on where you live you may be able to find apt complexes that have income contingent housing requirements. They will only rent to people who make less that so much a year..where i live some rental complexes wont rent to u if you make more than 35,000 a year and the monthly rent is very reasonable. Also, if contact HUD for affodable housing(Housing and Urban development). Their website will give you more info on affordable housing in your area.

Unfortunately, a minimum wage can only follow or precede inflation. If it precedes inflation, the increased wage costs will be passed on by employers and show themselves in the costs of our goods (this is inflation). If minimum wage follows inflation, as it has done traditionally, then low-wage workers are already feeling the pinch and the increased wages only help to offset the hurt. A COLA, or Cost Of Living Adjustment is the only real good way to remedy this situation, but to date no one has proposed a very realistic way to enact a policy like this. Unfortunately, housing rates will rise to what the market can bear, and as long as people will spend beyond their means then rent and house payments will rise, screwing the low-wage worker.

Well trying to buy a house if ur lowly paid is nearly impossible in the UK- look out of the box, into Italy etc and they sell houses for Â£1,000 on e-bay!!!

Oh, now...wait a minute. From my point of view, I think there is a lot that is done for low-wage earners in this country. I personally don't believe it's fair, either. There are people that abuse the system and ruin it for everyone else that legitimately needs it.

If you are a low-wage earner, you need to find another job or additional jobs to make ends meet. If you are able to be on the computer, does this mean that you have a computer at home with internet? Even if you are in someone else's home using the internet, why aren't you out working another job to help even out your money problems?

Note to jeeper...you got that right! My husband did not get where he is today by working only 40 hours per week. In fact, when we were first married, he was working about 70 hours per week, and I was working about 50 hours per week. Once we decided to start a family, I stayed at home, to help minimize expenses - we only went down to having just one car, and there wasn't a daycare expense - saved tons...sacrificed a lot. To this day, my husband still works more than 50 hours per week - and in the position that he's in, he's "on call" for just about anything, anytime!

The solution is to get a higher education so you can afford the more comfortable housing. The government shouldnt have to provide cheaper housing.
