Is This a Good Solution to Smoking?

Okay, I think I thought of a really good idea to stop future smokers from smoking in the future. Assuming you have to be 19 years or older to smoke in your country (i'm sure it's different in each country, but lets just say 19 for arguments sake). Instead of that, my law would be you would have to be born in 1989 to smoke(legally).

That would mean this year, the youngest you could be to (legally) smoke is 19, but in 10 years the youngest you could be is 29... in 50 years 69...

Eventually, no one will be old enough to smoke anymore. Maybe there might be a black market for cigarettes, but I doubt that will be a problem. It's not like its "drug" drug, you don't get high or anything.

I'm sure that would upset any to-young-to-be-smoking teens out there, but they shouldn't be smoking anyways (why would they want to?).

I know the government would never pass such a law because they're corrupt and make a lot of money off the smoking industry, but other than that, are there any other flaws in my law?
Additional Details
-Smoking ciggs isn't like drugs. People who do drugs do it to get high. People who smoke cigarettes do it because they're addicted. Most people who smoke cigarettes want to quit.

-I know this law wont help any smokers above the age of 19, but it will help the new generations to come. It's not a quick fix. But maybe in 100 years smoking will be completely phased out.

- Maybe some of you don't care about issues that don't affect you, but I do. I know a lot of people that died of lung cancer.

- I don't think this law would take away anymore human rights than the current age restriction laws.

Yes, but then you create a black market where the contents aren't regulated. There could be anything in the cigarettes, things that could kill people. This is what happened during prohibition. I think more and more education, and more stigma attached to smoking will eventually make it something non-existent. The last 20 years have shown a sharp decrease in smoking adults so we need to continue that.

Rules against where people can smoke is one deterrent. I can't believe that people used to be allowed to smoke in offices, hospitals, etc!

Outlawing smoking is stupid. If somebody wants to kill himself, go ahead. I don't care. It's their life.

people would still find a way if they wanted to

SORRY, IT WOULD NEVER WORK. IT DOESN"T MAKE SENSE AND THE TOBACCO LOBBYISTS ARE TOO STRONG.

Hello, I love you.
no, that would not work. even though you have to be 18 to smoke, kids such as 16 are even smoking. also, older people can just give then cigs.

Interesting. Good in theory, but probably not politically feasible. I agree that smoking is a dreadful habit in every way, but such a policy would be too much of a hindrance to individual liberty. You might as well just make it illegal, which would in turn set off something similar to what was seen during prohibition. I think a good alternative, however, would be to take all the tax dollars collected from the sales of cigarettes and set up a program/system to pay smokers to quit.

I started when I was 11...and the people buying for me were over 50. Like any other controlled substance, people will still find a way to get it, the only change would be higher taxes and more people in jail.

I think every non-smoker has thought of that solution at some point in their life, I know I thought of it when I was 16 and very anti-smoking but it just would never take off...people wouldn't always check ID, there's ALWAYS underage smokers. And people would also accuse the government of taking away their human rights.

Besides which the government would never go for it because the taxes are so high on cigarettes, it's a sad fact but true. Also if people didn't smoke a lot of people in the third world would go out of business and that wouldn't be very nice for them now would it...

Yeah there is. Because the people that started when they were 19 will never be cut off. So it wouldn't really solve the problem.

And it doesn't really make sense...like, at all.

Who's going to regulate this? Sounds difficult to keep up. Good in theory though.

There are laws in place right now that regardless of age it is illegal to smoke marijuana or snort coke but that doesn't stop people from doing it.

All I know is the best advice I can give you is do not read, "How I stopped smoking and kept stopped" by Barracks Obamas

This would create an illegal market for cigarettes. People will seriously smoke anything for the high, and when you make the high illegal then people are going to want it.
