Is getting fired and laid off a job the same thing?

No. Getting fired usually means you did something that made them terminate your employment. Being laid off is usually just because they were reducing their workforce and you got the axe; it's not necessarily because of something you did. |

No, fired means you were dismissed for some cause. Laid off generally refers to someone who was let go for financial reasons, such as lack of work. It carries no negative implications toward the employee |

Absolutely not and it means a world of difference in your immediate future.
Being fired means it was determined your unemployment means you are unemployed through your own fault and negligence and you are not eligible for unemployment compensation- you are SOL; if you are laid off, it means that you are being let go through no fault of your own and collect unemployment. |

Yes. When you say someone was "fired" it implies they were fired for cause, and when you say someone was laid off it implies lots of people were let go for financial reasons, but in practice it is often tricky to determine the real reason someone was let go. |
