Is it against the law to take tan naked in my backyard in Virginia?

Laws vary from state to state, but as long as you aren't in public view (and IMHO, since your neighbors are on their own private property if and when they see you you still aren't in public view, but I'm no lawyer) you should be fine. However you should take whatever precautions you can to prevent problems from coming up--most people don't seem to understand what nudity is all about and may react negatively toward your behavior.

Do you mind if other people see you naked? If so then you should try to stick to an area where you will have completel privacy.

How well do you know the neighbors? If you are on friendly terms and you know they might be cool with what you want to do (and you don't mind that they might take an occasional look) then maybe you could talk to them about it. I became a nudist because my college roommate talked to me about her desire to sleep nude. You never know what might happen if you talk to people. However, only do so if you are relatively sure that your discussion won't cause future bad blood.

It probably is (there are some crazy laws on the books in VA), but I don't think you'd be arrested. My mother called the cops because a guy was intentionally exposing himself to women and girls through a window and the cops interviewed her for a while before deciding it was worth coming out to talk to him about. (Because merely catching him playing with himself with the shades up wouldn't deserve a police response).

So you won't get in trouble unless someone complains, and even if that happens, you'll probably just be told to quit doing it rather than getting arrested. Of course, if you are asking because a neighbor already asked you to stop, you could get a ticket. If they can see you easily from their yard, the 'its my yard I'll do what I want' argument won't work--but you could put up a fence and then tan all you want.

In most states,it's alright as long as you're on YOUR property and NOT in public view. I mean as long as you're behind a fence where no one can see you from next door or from the street.

I live in virginia and while I don't know if it's illegal, I just hope I'm not your neighbor. Couldn't you at least wear bikini bottoms?

I wouldn't know the answer to your question however in my opinion as long as you have a privacy fence and you are not in open view of passers by what is the harm. It is your property and you pay your property taxes I'm sure so why not if it is what you like to do.

Sounds like your neighbors have the potential to see your yard, so I'd give them the common courtesy of a heads-up about it. Be sure they are OK with it and then go ahead. If they are not OK with it, try to time your tanning with the hours they are at work. Good luck.
