Is it ethical to pay for an interview?

It is ethical and legal and done all the time. More common the "payment" isn't monetary; instead, it's more quid pro quo through exposure. So they do you a favor, and you do them a favor by getting their name out in the press.

I think first you just have to be clear on your objective. Anyone who speaks to you knowing their comments may contribute to your writing will surely have an agenda. If their agenda is simply cash, then that is quite clear... often their agenda is difficult to determine.

Note: my agenda is I want 10 points :-)

Lawyers charge when you interview them to decide whether you want to hire them.

It's not ethical, I don't know about legal. Any doctor worth interviewing will ask that you contact him personally to verify who you are before answering any questions, I would think. I think you would get a better quality of individual if you went to a doctor's registry and selected a few names from it and requested interviews, or post on medical sites that doctors are likely to frequent instead of something like craigslist.com. In light of the recent news about a medical student posting on that site that resulted in a murder and subsequent arrest, don't you think this might not be in your best interests? Ethical or not, its dumb. Look for someone else.

people get paid for interviews all the time...its actually fairly normal. I mean how do you think all the mags get interviews with celebs?

If it is craiglist, i doubt the credentials. But, a doctor, a lawyer, an oilman, a psychiatrist, yes they do charge for interviews. There are professional job titles which receive from clients.

It isn't journalism when the interview is paid for.

Would you pay a prospective employer for their drug lab test to get to stage two in a job interview? That is ethics.

Tell that individual nothing. Do not even grace him/her with a response. NO it is not ethical and I would be willing to bet that person is no where even close to a Dr. in education. Have a nice day.

of course its alright, you are taking their time away from their job its like the same thing that celebs charge for pictures and that stuff....its all just business...
