Is it illeagal to lie/leave things out on a CV? UK?

Could a person be prosecuted under UK law? Or is it only the job you risk losing if caught?
Additional Details
Sorry- illegal.

If it we're all going to jail!

It's more likely that you will be fired, but it depends on the lie I guess.

No you cant get prosecuted but you could lose your job,
Who dosnt tell the odd white lie on their cv

dunrobin46
Very much depends what you leave out.
At one end of the scale you could be accused of fraud, at the other end you could be dismissed for dishonesty if something material came to light.

Charlene
Doubt its illegal but you will get in trouble if they find out you lied at your interview and got the job.

If you obtain a job by lying to your employer, you're guilty of fraud. It's very unlikely that you'd actually be charged, but it is illegal. Leaving something out might be okay, I suppose it would depend on the specific wording.

it is not illegal, nor can you be prosecuted but as Sal*Uk says...it is not a good idea....i'm intrigued now...what are you going to leave out hun?? - lol!!

It is technically possible that you could be accused of obtaining money by deception if you got the job on the strength of lying in a CV. At the very least it is fraud and misrepresentation. As an employer I would take a very dim view of it, if I found out one of my staff had lied on a CV. Leaving something out that is relevant is pretty bad as well, but would be more difficult to prove intent.

Everyone does it! I didnt at first and then noticed tyhat everyone who did it seemed to be getting fabulous jobs and I being honest and good, wasnt! So I decided that I may as well do what everyone else does...which so far has worked quite well!
I mean it depends also on your lies...mine are only minor...on the other hand if you say you are a qualified teacher and you're not tut tut tut! Never gonna work!

But to be honest, if you have say 1 years experience working for a company...and the job you are applying for requires you to have 2 years experience, you wouln't have leant anything new really in the second year...so your experience is just as good as 2 years....so a little lie to say you have 2 years experience won't hurt unless that company os where you're gonna get your reference from, in which maybe not!

Plus as you have added above, filling a few gaps is gonna hurt as long as you have the experience as you have said! That's the important thing!

I agree with Sasha B!You would not just believe what I have left off my CV!The 'trick' is !You have got to develop a good memory!

By lying you could be summoned for try to gain by fraudulant claim.
To leave things out is ok.
Most C V's are tailor made for the job applied for.
ie If wanting a job as a road sweeper you leave out the fact that you are a brain surgeon.

Niss
its not against the law but lying would not be a good start for a job that you really want.

Sal*UK
Not illegal to do either, but lying on a CV really isn't a good idea.

No it is not illegal on a CV, however the employer would not think highly of you if they found out.
Application Forms are a different matter. if you lie on an Application Form then you could be in trouble! An Application Form is a legally binding document which you have to be truthful on.

Good luck

i think you only lose your job, and probably will never work again because of bad references etc. of course if you lie that you are a doctor and you injure someone as a result you could be prosecuted for that or any other such example. It depends what you lie about, you can lie that you like skiing in your hobbies, or you can lie that you are a chartered accountant when you arent. it depends what you lie about and if any harm is done as a result of your lack of experience..

When you fill out an application form for a job, where you sign it, it says "To my Knowledge the information I have given is true" which is in-fact legally binding once signed. Ive never heard of anyone ever being prosecuted for lieing about qualifications, unless it was medical, people pretending to be Doctors etc. I myself have never told the truth on a CV or Job Application, they never check, the key is to embellish what you do have without going into blatant lies.
