Im asking because someone brought it up and it made me wonder if there was some kind of law. I know its unethical, but I need to know. If there is one, I could immediately look it up and slam the law in their faces.
If it matters, Im in California
Example: You adopt a puppy for $250. You sell it out for $500 or $750 or something.
Additional Details
oh and I mean in bundles. You constantly do it. Not just adopt it once and give up raising the dog and give it away. I mean adopt like 5 puppies then sell them off at a higher price to gain profit.

It depends on how you took ownership of the dog. It would be governed by civil law - not criminal.
Often, when you adopt a dog you sign a contract where you promise to return the dog to the shelter if you chose to no longer own the dog. You would violate this kind of contract by selling adopted dogs.
Otherwise, dogs are considered chattel - property. Once you own the dog (or a chair, armoire, car, etc.) you can do with it as you please in terms of ownership. If you adopt a dog with the above kind of contract, you do not have the right to sell the dog. The shelter could sue you for breach of contract. Remember how Ellen DeGeneres got in trouble for giving away a dog she adopted? Same thing. |

Shelters and rescue groups require adopters to sign a contract agreeing to return the dog to the shelter or rescue group if the adopter cannot or will not keep the dog. These contracts have been upheld by the courts. |

NO not illegal, but they are careful to whom they let adopt the animals. If your doing it for self profit you might not get to far because after your second or third your going to get red flagged. I understand a hustle but sometimes you just end up wasting your time.
