It's fine to drive barefoot. In spite of persistent myths, there are NO laws against driving barefoot. Unfortunately, this myth is so common that even some cops believe it... but everyone who believes this please see source and stop spreading this falsity. Dee2zo, could you have your daughter print out those pages in source & show them around? It's so sad so many people, including cops, honestly believe this myth, now another whole school class will believe it!!!
Some cops are convinced it's unsafe and even though they know it's not illegal may try to write you up for unsafe or reckless driving, however please see the second and third link in the source, for two sites (one from the Michigan PD, one from an Australian newspaper) making it clear that driving barefoot is no more unsafe than many types of footwear that are regularly worn and could even be considered safer than many kinds of shoes.
Then there are folks who say it's dangerous in case you have to get out of the car & there's glass, other litter or the pavement is very hot. Well, some of us go barefoot all the time on pavement too, feet quickly get very tough. But if you're worried about this keep a pair of flipflops close. Just take them off to drive because the loose footwear is less safe than the bare feet! |

Not in California. I actually called up once to ask. The Highway Patrolman who answered the phone said he wouldn't recommend it, but it's not illegal. |

Different state have different laws. Depends where ya live. I don't suggest doing it. You foot is more susceptible to slip of the petal and lose control. |

I was wondering the same thing today...as I was driving barefoot.
When my sister was 16, 20 years ago, the driving instructor told her she had to wear shoes...she was wearing heels and failed.
Here is a website that may give you info on your state:
