Find answers to your legal question.

Is it illegal to house a minor who's been kicked out?

Recently, a friend of mine was kicked out of her home. She's only 17. Can my family be charged with housing a runaway seeing as she's a minor? I've looked everywhere else an I can't find an answer. Please help.

So far as I know, it isn't, unless the parents try to make a stink that your parents kidnapped her or something. That isn't the case here though.

In any case, you should contact the police because in most places, by law, parents are required to house their children until they are legal adults, and that's at age 18. If the law where you are says 17, then she can stay over because the law says she can make her own choices. However, in this case, I'd question why she was kicked out in the first place. That's why authorities should get involved because most loving parents wouldn't do this and I would be concerned for potential abuse.

I wouldn't think so if she was kicked out. You're giving a home to someone who is homeless. IF there was a problem I would say it would be with the person or persons who kicked her out. Also depending on what state you're in she may legally be an adult.

Depends:
Do her parents know where she is?

just me
Most likely no as she didn't leave voluntarily and is almost of age. but to be sure call and ask your local police station.

Every state has different laws . There is a social services youth and family division that can answer questions. It would be good to have it on record that her family tossed her since she is a minor and to see what long term help she can get to plan and move on with her future despite the failure of family. It would be wise for your friend to seek counseling with case management through a county mental health agency or youth program. ......harboring a minor or runaway could be a legal issue.

Check with the police.

AI FBI
No such law as "housing a runaway". All minors will have a legal guardian. If she got kicked out of home, her family will have alot of questions to answer. Its not like you are forcing her to stay with you.

If her parents don't know where she is, then YES. You need to tell them you have her and explain to your friend that she needs to go home to her family now.

Probably.

Most things are illegal now. That's how we do it in the "Land of the Free".
