It absolutely is illegal to possess a "switch blade" knife in Maine as well as any knife that can be opened by flicking the wrist and/or use of gravity. It is illegal to sell them in Maine as well and I know of many a dealer/store that has got caught selling knives that open by flick of the wrist. Most know switch blades are a no no but many do not know about the other "dangerous knives" that are illegal. Our department has a stash of hundreds of knives taken from people over the years.
Possessing one is a criminal offense for which you could be arrested for on the spot. I'm cant say that I really agree with the other dangerous knives part of the law but that is how it is and you could definately get in trouble if you have one. Here is a copy/paste of the title and section of Maine law.
1055. Trafficking in dangerous knives
1. A person is guilty of trafficking in dangerous knives, if providing he has no right to do so, he knowingly manufactures or causes to be manufactured, or knowingly possesses, displays, offers, sells, lends, gives away or purchases any knife which has a blade which opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in the handle of the knife, or any knife having a blade which opens or falls or is ejected into position by the force of gravity, or by an outward, downward or centrifugal thrust or movement.
