I hate those lines where after you pay for your items, they make you wait in another line to walk out. I was wondering if they have a right to stop you from walking out. I say this because technically they cannot accuse you of stealing, and if you have proof that you didn't, the company is in jeopardy of getting sued for making that kind of accusation. So im just wondering if its illegal for you to walk out of the door promptly after paying for your merchandise?

I think I should clarify, that there are those people like outside of costco and stuff who you take your receipt to shortly after paying, and they mark it with a highlighter as a secondary check.

Can you walk out without check? Legally yes! Can they detain you in order to check for unpaid for merchandise? Yes they can. If you don't like the procedure shop elsewhere. You can also get expert answer on this forum site linked here |

Of course it's legal to just go. People do it all the time in busy areas.
Sometimes at train stations and such they won't even ask for change.
I remember once I was late catching a train and I wanted a soda. It was 1.70. There was a line. I just put 2 dollars on the sales counter held the soda up, the clerk nodded and I walked off. |

No, I don't think it is. I've never seen it. If they wanted to, they could check the credit card or whatever. Most people WANT receipts, so yeah. They can't, though. But most places give you like a discount or free or something if THEY forget to give it to you. |

Your call if you want to do that, walking out of the store without your receipt. You just better hope the cashier can recognize you paying for the items you bought. Frankly I personally always ask for receipts specially now in this economic time where shop lifting incidents have drastically gone up. |

No it's not illegal, but you may want to make it a habit to get your receipt so that if a product is defective, or doesn't work, or doesn't fit, or you decide you don't want it, you will be able to take it back because you have the receipt. Lines seem to be a part of life these days, so just take a deep breath, get in line you may find out its worth the wait. |
