It is not a federal law, but every state has imposed one.
Typically, if you get pulled over, and you cannot supply a license- you get a ticket with a court date.
If you have a license you simply show up and show you license - the ticket gets dropped and you pay the court costs.
If you do not have a license, you go and get one before your court date, and you show up to court - the ticket gets dropped and you pay the court costs. |

Interesting. How do you identify yourself? Here in the US your license is used mostly to show who you are.
You have to have a license to drive, of course, and if you don't have it with you that's not consider a serious crime, not nearly as serious as driving without one! I got stopped once and didn't have my wallet. The cop let me go as soon as he determined that I was who I said I was, I was on file as having a license, and had no warrants against me. I didn't get written up for it or anything.
It's the same with proof of insurance. You MUST be insured or there are big fines. But if you don't have your insurance info on you, that's not nearly as bad as not having insurance. |

Yes . even if you have a license but don't have it with you. The police can ticket you for not having a license . When you go to court they will drop the cost of the ticket but many states still require to pay the court cost which is about 80% of the ticket in many places. If you can remember your license #. That sometimes help so the cops can id you and some times will just issue a warning. They made this a law so people with warrants and tickets.Can't just claim to be someone else . 3 things i almost always have handy , license, insurance card , gun permit so they don't freak when they find my gun. |
