Is it legal for a hair salon to charge for a missed appointment?

Additional Details
This is regarding a HAIR SALON, not a doctor.
I had to reschedule what would have been a $300 hair app't at the last minute because my car broke down. About 2 hours after I rescheduled, someone called me from the salon & asked me if I was aware of their policy of charging for missed appointments to which I answered 'no'..because I was not aware of the policy. I have been going to the same somewhat pricey hair salon for over 8 years & have never habitually missed appointments nor was I ever informed of this policy verbally or seen it posted anywhere at the salon.

yes if you comp;ltly missed they plannded on you coming in to get your hair done.. .. because they more than likely could of scheduled someone else .. instead the chair more than likely was empty

This question is more complicated than you probably think it is, but the short answer is "yes." The salon expected to profit from your appointment, and when you failed to show up not only didn't they get your business, but it was also probably impossible for them to book someone else for the slot.

Now, if they bill you, you could always refuse to pay. But that's up to you.

Common
Absolutely.

Do you expect to get paid if you go to work even if there's nothing to do that day? Why should a hair dresser not expect to get paid when he/she was there, ready and had blocked out that time to cut your hair?

Yup... Think of it this way.
Yes, although it isn't a question of legality as there are not laws governing such action.
The policy to charge for missed appointments is made by many doctors and health care providers, including dentist, psychologists, even some clinics. It may not seem fair to the individual who is being billed but it is most assuredly not illegal.
Answer
Here in the UK we don't pay for health care as we have the National health Service paid for through taxes and national Insurance, but even here we are starting to have to pay for missed appointments.
If you don't turn up the doctor has to wait a while to see if you do which wastes his time, and the appointment could have been used for someone else who needed it.
It is calculated that each missed appointment with a family physician costs 30 (about $44 dollars, and each missed hospital appointment costs 50 (about $70)

Yes, but I think they have to inform you when you make the appointment.

The opening line is my favorite. Its not a doctor but a hair stylist?? Seriously? And CLEARLY your still not getting it so I have the perfect solution for both you and the salon. As a veteran hairstylist of 25 years and an independent contractor, I was left with no choice but to have all of my clients sign contracts authorizing me to bill them on a presubmitted credit/debit card to be billed for ANY missed time they have booked with me. If I had an eight year client who was loyal and dependable as you claim you are, I personally would have forgiven your missed appt due to your misfortune had you have called me promptly. Who doesnt have a cell phone these days?? I have cancelled appts on my cell on the way to the ER with my child bleeding from a gash in his head. Your opening comment implying we as hairstylist dont deserve respect for our time because we arent doctors?? Really now?? How would it be if your next hairstylist just never took any of YOUR time seriously?? Or just YOU in general? Is it okay for her to have a fender bender on her lunch hour and decide you are way to unimportant to contact for your 5pm color you scheduled with her? Would it frustrate you if you drove all the way there for nothing and a simple courtesy call would have eliminated all YOUR time wasted? Why should she respect your time?? You're not a doctor!! I have that ornary 3% of my clientelle who shares your lack of respect of a hairsylist's time and I tried everything known to man to try to get them to do better. it wasnt until i made EVERYONE sign contracts with cc numbers did these self centered ignorant types finally see the light!! As soon as their time was paid for whether they were 25 min late or no shows or whatever?? They were charged accordingly. I am far from unreasonable nor am i unflexable. I will forgive an entirely forgotten 2 hr blocked color by a client who is loyal, dependable, and low stress. Then turn around and bill another for her late arrival on top of her full price service fee. If you want to show up 17 min late for every appt you have made in 5 yrs i have arranged it to where it doesnt leave me uncompensated for the time I waste waiting for you to grace me with your presence. And , yes, my time is every bit as valuable as a doctors.
