Find answers to your legal question.

Is it legal to carry a gun?

Is it legal to carry a gun in the US?

You have a licensee, the gun's registered and all that bollocks. I know you can have one but are you allowed to carry it around?

in virginia, you can have it strapped to you, so long as its showing. if its concealed, you need a concealed carriers permit. in virginia, you dont even have to have it registered... each states laws are different.

thought i'd just add, you dont even need to get a special license. when my fiance bought his, they did a background check, but if you buy it privately, they dont even need to do that. we just happened to be at a gun show where there are lots of companies there that actually do the checks. before he bought it, we had gone to the range a few times with a cop friend and my step-father who is retired military. they were our safety training. to get the concealed carriers permet we'd actually have to go thru real classes and what-not, but other than that, you can just go out and buy one here. god bless virginia!!!

It varies state to state.

You'll need to go take a course, and buy a special license.

Go for it. I WANT more citizens carrying guns!!! It makes the criminal element think twice.

Every state and county has different laws.

In my county (Spotsylvania, Virginia), you can buy a gun following a background check. The gun is not registered, you can walk away with it.

You can walk around with a holster and the gun in plain sight anywhere you want to (except bars, churches, schools, and all other off limits places that violate the constitution.)

You can have it on your dashboard of your car.

But if you want it concealed (in clothes or in your glove-box) you have to get a concealed carry permit.

Now, I have to be careful, because the law in my county could be that, but next door it all changes.

Under a LITERAL interpretation of the Second Amendment "the right of the PEOPLE to keep and BEAR arms, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED."
If that does not mean I can carry a gun, it doesn't mean anything.
That said, most states have laws that restrict the right. I believe 2 states allow anyone without a felony record to carry a concealed weapon without a permit. Most allow a process to obtain a concealed carry permit. A few essentially ban the practice.
On a side note: Many states require a permit to carry a concealed weapon, but have no laws addressing open carry.

each state has its own concealed carry laws for handguns.. in Texas, you need a license, which requires you take and pass a class on handgun safety, and a firing range test (i believe in Florida, you don't even need a license to carry)... once you have a license, you can legally carry it anywhere except where prohibited (like schools and hospitals)... however, you can keep a gun in your vehicle or home without any kind of license. there is no such thing as firearm registration, unless it is a fully automatic weapon, which also requires a class C license, which is more difficult to obtain. also, the castle law has recently been extended to your car, so if you shoot someone in self-defense near your vehicle or home, the person cannot sue you in civil court for medical expenses or pain and suffering or any of that... hope that helps.

It's in the Bill of Rights, we have the right to bear arms. As you have all the technical hoo-haa for it, yes, it's perfectly legal, provided it isn't concealed. That's a whole different story.

firstly you have a right to defend urself and therefore carry tools to help u do so regardless of what the law says about it cause laws can be made to say whatever the **** they want and you have the right to do it without a license shame on you for even getting one as u just strengthened the states tyranic assertion on who can and cant defend themselves and strengthened their monopoly on use of force govt has no right to tell you what kind of weapons u can carry in ur defense

Joeblow
Our founding fathers were clear that any american citizen had a right to own and bear arms, but through the attempt to destroy another one of our rights we now (depending on each state) have to get licenses and permits, some states are more lax than others. In california a vey liberal state it is very hard to get a concealed firearm permit.

John de Witt
It's different in each state. New York has one of the most restrictive laws. Vermont requires no registration or licensure either to own or carry. A bit over twenty years ago, Florida changed its licensure system to a "must issue" law, in which licensure is required for concealed carry but anybody who meets objective criteria must be allowed licensure. That law was so successful that most states have followed suit, and that's the middle-of-the-road position. Only a few states, by the way, require licensure for simple ownership. There's a national database that is run at the time of purchase to exclude those who aren't allowed to buy a gun, but that's completely different from requiring licensure.

Yes, but it's limited. You can't carry guns in bars, clubs (nice going, Plaxico Burress), and etc.

It depends on what state you're in as each one deals with guns differently.

In states like Arizona which have open carry laws you can carry a gun anywhere where it's not prohibited (ie gov't buildings, banks, etc) as long as it's holstered and visible, period, no permit inloved.

Other states will only allow you to carry in public if you conceal it, in which case a conceal carry permit is required. All states require a conceal carry permit to carry a concealed weapon.

The laws also very by state when traveling or transporting weapons.

Yo can get a permit to carry the gun around but remember you are not allowed to take it into Bars where alcohol is served.

Most states have a permit that lets you carry a gun openly, and another that lets you carry a gun either openly or concealed.

You need a license to carry, otherwise you could be charged with carrying a concealed weapon. I believe you need a license to carry from your state of residence (the Attorney General's office).

Ask Janine
You need a license to actually carry it in public and a separate license to have it in your home.

If you are caught with a gun without this license/permit you can go to jail.
