Is it legal to get a letter from the court stating you have court the next day with no notice?

I own a small painting company. I am being sued by a customer who doesn't know what she wants. She filled with the magistrate on March 11,2009 the it was continued again. I was never informed of and court or anything until today when the constable showed up at my home with the papers. I have court now tommorow at 9:00AM. I was just told a hour ago which was 6:30PM. As I said eairlier I never recieved anything in the mail, I was never contacted by anyone until today. Is this legal. Fileing over a month ago getting a trial continued and me never knowing until now. I get no notice or anything. Is there anything I can do?

Advice, make court date. Not illegal but certainly short notice.*

yes it is legal. if you had bothered to contact the court you might have got more notice. In small claims especially there is no rule concerning how much notice. If you want a continuance in order to gather evidence, and you explain to the court that you were unable to gather your evidence due to the lack of adequate notice, most courts will be quick to reschedule.

technically it is legal, if it is for a pretrial dont worry you will get a period called "Discovery", for the courts to see if the lawsuit is legit.

Show up at the court date and explain to the magistrate that you only got served the day before...he will probably continue it for you.
