Have they no obligation to do their job?
For those of you who say they receive hundreds/thousands/millions of letters....
I am sure they do receive a lot of correspondence, but I am sure there are only a few people who make repeated attempts to contact them multiple methods over a several month period and pay a bunch of money to pay courier to hand deliever messages to them. It seems if they only have time to respond to a few messages then those are the few they should be responding to
For those of you who say, if you don't like it, then vote them out office..
What are the citizens suppose to do in the mean time, they only have one rep designated to their district, are they suppose to continue to allow an unjust law exist until the next election which could be years away in some states.

There is of course no law that requires a congressman to reply to you. Your option indeed is to work to defeat this person in the next election.
You can also contact your state senator(s), who also represent you.
Lastly, even though you have a right to be treated with respect, one wonders about your intent. Multiple attempts to contact someone, using multiple forms of communication, can easily make you seem like some sort of crackpot. In addition, a single representative has little or no control over 'unjust laws', and even IF they were to work tirelessly on your behalf, it's unlikely they would be able to remove such a law from the books in a single term. |

If you are repeatedly sending letters and emails and making phone calls, they may have decided that you're a crank who is best ignored. They have no legal obligation to respond to you. |

Representatives receive a lot of correspondence. They decide which they should respond to. As a matter of fact, if a person has made repeated and expensive efforts to make contact, it may be a reason NOT to reply to that person.
How do citizens get the attention of a representative in a POSITIVE way? They join with others in an interest group advocating the same public policy issues. So, find the interest group that reflects the issues you support, join them. Through that interest group, your voice and your fellow citizens' voices are heard in the legislature.
Individuals rarely make a difference in legislation. People organized in groups make all the difference. James Madison and other early American understood the pluralist conflicts that are essential to democracy. |
