I went to the hospital for abdominal issues. They needed a ct scan with contrast. I informed the staff I am allergic to fish and derivatives and therefore can not have Iodine. They were told this repeatedly through the evening by my partner and I.
When they took me for the CT, they again asked if I was allergic. I told them I was. The tech consulted with the Dr. and came back saying the dr. wanted the contrast, and since I was in the hospital if I stopped breathing they could save me. They then proceeded to begin then iodine drip. I instantly began to feel an allergy, I complained that my throat was tight. The tech said it was normal. Witihin seconds my chest tightened and I could not breath. I waved my arms and they stopped the drip, sitting me up I threw up all the barium. The tech laughed and said I guess you wern't lying about being allergic.
I was taken back to my room. I went to the bathroom and you could visually see that I was swollen in the face and neck, and red. I told my partner to inform the nurse. I was given a benedryl injection and got sick again. A half hour later, they rold me nothing was wrong and sent me home.
I feel there was some negligence there and wonder if it would be worth a lawsuit or complaint.

It sounds negligent to me, you made it clear you were allergic and they disregarded that. It doesn't matter if you knew they were doing it - it's natural to trust medical professionals and they need to act on the information they are given.
I would definitely complain because they need to change their procedures and learn to take allergies seriously.
Whether you could file a lawsuit depends on what your injuries were - did the symptoms go away or did you sustain permanent damage to your health? Did it stop you working or earning money? If nothing much happened, then it's probably not worth suing them over it. |

They couldn't have given you a scan without it so you should have said point blank you didn't want one done. |

I would talk to the hospital administrator, patients should not be ignored - especially if asked if their allergic to something - why are they in business to hurt people? You see it all the time when people are given the wrong injections or the wrong dosage - all hell breaks loose. I'm sorry you have problems "w/abdominal Issues"
I have an hernia under my right breast - they wanted to "repair" - luckily my B/P was so high they wouldn't do the surgery - I was upset then, but I'm ok with now, and my hernia doesn't bother me in the least. (got lots of blubber covering it) You should write a few letters to the local medical oversight boards in your area, and let them know how little faith you have in your medical treatment. Change your doctor while your at it. |

Not if you allowed them to start the Iodine drip. If they did it without your knowledge, then you'd have a case. |
