Is it naive to trust doctor's office staff with all my personal info?

I live in a small community and will be seeing a fertility specialist, so you can imagine all the detailed questions on the application on extremely personal info (from partners to STDs to fertility issues and on and on and medical history etc.). I think the receptionist goes to my church and it would pretty much ruin my chances of marriage in the community if any info on my file was spread around. I'm tempted to fill out a 2nd version keeping to myself a lot of the info the application asks for. There is no other fertility doc in the area. What should I do? What would you do?

It's against federal law (HIPAA) for providers to disclose patient information to anybody not directly involved in your care. A receptionist at a fertility clinic probably sees all kinds of things but the clinic wouldn't stay open long if she was blabbing. You would also have the right to tell them that if you ever hear anything about you outside the office, you'll have the feds in there faster than they could say "HIPAA violation". Everybody takes HIPAA very seriously so they won't mess around. |

They ask you the questions they ask for a reason. If you do not answer the questions truthfully, your care could suffer as a result. If you absolutely cannot reveal that information there, you need to find another doctor. |

Doctor's offices are covered by strong federal privacy laws. If any member of the staff disclosed your confidential information without your consent, the office would be fined (if not shut down) and your doctor's career would be over. I wouldn't worry about it. |
