Perhaps. French was the international language of diplomacy for centuries. German was the language of scientists until the turn of the last century with WWI.
When China opens up its markets for investment and they take the artificial cap off the yuan everyone had best polish up on their Chinese. |

Very doubtful for the simple reason that it is one of the easiest languages to learn .True some of the spellings are curious and the i before e except when preceded by c has exceptions Still we have the indefinite article to refer to inanimate objects such as 'the chair' 'the ship' we do not give gender to things or ideas. It is still the international language at sea. It is basic and uncomplicated It is also very beautiful. |

seems to be the opposite, more and more speak it and want to speak it. |

No, in fact just the opposite, the world is rapidly becoming a world of english speaking as a secondary language. It is foreseeable that english will one day be the world language.. |

one day perhaps but that day is a long way away. english is the language of air travel anf most science and tech areas. not to mention finance and general business. no doubt at some point some language will displace it just and latin has pretty much gone away but like i said it a long ways down the road |

What on earth would make you think that? |

i don`t think it will be phased out as such but there might be a time in the future when a lot of languages blend together to make an international language . that's not so far fetched because look how many languages have contributed to our English but it will be in the distant future if ever |

probably so, though i'm thinking that the time scale will be hundreds, even a thousand years. greek and latin were the main world languages at one point, and they too have passed away. even if america is still a major power in centuries to come, it is likely that our language will have changed to the point that we could not understand it if we heard it today. |

WHAT? Don't believe everything you hear. That's just ridiculous. |

To judge by their pathetic attempts to communicate, quite a few correspondents here not only appear to think it is true, but seem to believe that day has already dawned...! |

Its possible. At one point Latin was the international language of choice because it is what the Romans spoke. But nowadays Latin is a "dead" language. However, that likely won't happen for a long time. |

i can't see it being voluntarily phased out.....it probably will change drastically/become extinct at SOME point in the what, 5 billion years we've got left?
at the moment though.....can't see it happening for a long time. china is going to be one of the next world superpowers, they get taught english in school and already have more english speakers than the usa. but hardly any countries learn chinese, and it's basically unheard of it being taught in schools in europe and north america. english is already big and is beginning to grow |

Phased out is the wrong way to look at it. I would say you should look at as - the need to know other languages will likely become more important. As our economy truly becomes global, and as our travel becomes faster, we will need to be able to communicate with other cultures and languages and adapt to their needs for our survival. If you look at the two fastest growing ethnic races - Hispanic and Asian - I would say it would be a good idea to teach our children these languages in addition to english. Language of the future will likely be a mix of several languages. As English speaking minorities begin to decrease in population, and other races grow in size - there is no doubt we "English Speaking" people will need to conform to their needs. |

nah i dont see it being phased out at all, people use it today because its one of the easier languages to master, yushoul worry more about the english lnguage is changing with the use of slang and unpopular words in replace of popular ones |
