Are you in the United States? In the US, yes, most states require that you have your license with you at any time you are operating a motor vehicle. You can even get a traffic ticket or be charged with a misdemeanor if you don't have the license with you. |

UK Law: No, but the police can require you to produce it in a police station if they suspect you've committed a driving offence. You get to choose the station, however, and you have seven days to produce it. |

YES - this is the law. In most states though, if you are stopped - they can look up your info. I would suggest always having it available for information purposes. |

It really wouldn't hurt to have it with you at all times...even when you're just the passenger. You'll never know when you have to drive when some really unfortunate event happens. |

What country are you from? In the UK no, you are simply advised to carry docs. Have you not heard of a producer?
I hope you haven't started driving yet, because your instructor can tell you that. Also read the Highway Code. |

In the United States, you must have your drivers license on you while driving, otherwise, if you get pulled over and do not have it you will get ticketed. |
|

and points and fined by the courts |

I heard there was a fine of like $125 if you get caught buzzing around without your physical license on you. Mine us usually in the little pocket in my visor. |

Yes, though the worst that could happen is to be given a producer. |
|

Idon't know

yes, but most likely if you get a ticket, you can get it dismissed by showing to the court clerk that you had a license, but did not have it on you at the time. |

No!But you must hand it in to a named police station within 7days!Always make sure that it is signed! |

|
No it is not ! but it does help as if the police are in doubt who you are if they stop you, they do like to see some form of identity to prove who you are but there is definitely no legal requirement for you to carry your licence. |

According to the Patriot Act which legally supersedes the U.S. Constitution as well as all state laws whereby states have received government funding for freeways and highways!
You must carry a valid photo I.D. on your person at all times when in public and must have a valid license to drive on your person when operating a motorized vehicle.
Look it up- read it and weep. As to enforcement, this will depend upon the arrestors discretion. It is written law since 9/11.
Most people never take into account the new regulations since 9/11- but they do exist and can be enforced at anytime!!! |

While previous replies have answered the question for the U.K. for all practical purposes, British law is actually rather more convoluted when it comes to the details.
There is no law which states explicitly that you must carry your license with you when driving. There IS a law, however, which states that you must produce your license upon demand to a police officer or other authorized official.
So technically, if you are stopped by the police, asked for your license, and cannot produce it on the spot, you have committed an offense at that point. However the law goes on to say that it shall be considered a defense to the charge if you produce your license within 7 days at a nominated police station. That's where the "producer" ticket comes into play.
Thus in theory, you have committed an offense by failing to produce your license when stopped. It's just that in practice, the whole matter will be dropped and no further action taken so long as you turn up with your license within the required time.
The same rules apply to your insurance & MoT certificates. |

Not at all. Hell if the police say anything, just drive away really quickly and they'll think you're such a charming chap and let you be. |
