if the diary was taken without permission to be read then its stolen property, that is illegal. I'm not sure if reading it is but its awfully rude.

diaries are entirely personal. there's no law saying someone can't read one that doesn't belong to them. that would be too dictatorial of the government as it is a private matter.

No. If you are stupid enough to write down your life in book for people to read you can't complain when someone reads it. When I had a diary as a child I left out the bits that could cause me grief and used different names when I wanted to put down my feelings about things. You just have to learn to write in code a little more so that you can remember your past without other people being able to fully understand......either that or put a lock on it next time.

You should keep it in a better hiding place... or if you're going to leave it lying around, at least learn to write nice things about people.

I feel it's an invasion of one's privacy. But also if the contents of that diary holds incriminating evidence, maybe the 'reader' will find themselves in a legal situation, after reading it then withholding information.

reading somebody's personal diary may not be illegal but certainly immoral.

But if it has caused conflicts then better consult a law practitioner.

Edit: I recommend if you want to continue having a diary then use your email, you can write it and save it as a draft or write an email to yourself with the subject being the date and save it in a folder named "diary" or I guess something more secretive if you prefer. I usually send notices to myself because I'm forgetful but sometimes they are personal. I would prefer paper because I'm not the fastest typer but at least its password protected and I can delete it, remember if you do follow the email diary suggestion the email will be in your sent folder, your inbox folder(until you send it to a sub folder) and when you delete it, your trash(for at least 48 hours) so you have to make sure you delete it from all those places if you have to.

It's your responsibility to conceal your diary, and there is no law that protects it from being read by other members of your own household. Many people these days keep their diary on their computer, and protect it with a password so that family members cannot snoop into it.

no, but im pretty sure it is under the invasion of privacy. while reading someone's diary could give vital info like the daily activities and such so it's still a crime.

Well, it's an invasion of privacy, but I don't really think there is any legal ramifications for this annoyance.

If someone reads your diary and then starts talking bad about you behind your back, and using your diary against you, then YES you can take legal action because that is called "Liable".

Look up the legal rules about "Slander" and "Liable" and see if either one of those fits your situation. If not, then there is nothing you can do except for beat the person with a cricket bat for reading your personal stuff.
