Is there a moral argument that supports copyrights lasting 50 years or more?

It seems that if I were still being paid 50 years from now for 40 hours of work I did, I would be less motivated to work, let alone do good work.

Also, I hear the law is being extended to 70 years or more. How can this be right when inventors that produce products with tangible benefits get 7 years to make a profit(and they usually do)?

Intellectual property is inherently less able to be 'owned' than physical, and a direct comparison is always going to be ludicrus.

Every day, individuals go to work and produce a good or service that is then taken away from them. Once they have sold/been paid for that good or service it ceases to be theirs. Some wish to consider this definitive transfer of product theft. I am asking for moral justification of that stance.

Can you say mouse? Congress can. The House of Mouse will do anything, say anything and contribute zillions of dollars to prevent Mickey from going into the public domain.

That's why we have the copyright laws we have.

Yeah, probably, their are a lot of "one hit wonders" out there, they need something to survive on :P

I do agree though that the time frame is way, way too long. 10 years should be sufficient to secure your profit from intellectual property.

Yes. They made it they own it. It is called private property.

Is there a moral argument to be made for your being able to own your house for more than 50 years?

Flip it. What argument is there for letting people steal someone else's property?
