If there is, make sure they will also give a 17 year old a divorce without parental consent.

Otherwise, you will be pretty upset in a year...

It depends on the state but I would highly advise you not to do it, if you are asking this for yourself. 16 is way to young to get married. This is your time to enjoy life. Marriage is a lot of work and a very serious commitment. Think long and hard about this. You have plenty of time.

If you get married when you are 16, you are dooming yourself. Most of my friends were in really serious relationships in high school, and they stayed together until freshmen or sophomore year of college. Now in my junior year, me and my b/f are the only ones left who are still together. I know it seems really serious right now, but things really do change. People go in different directions. It is statistically really unlikely that you will meet the person you want to be with for the rest of your life within the first few years that you are seriously dating. Anyway, why the rush? I know my boyfriend and I are going to get married, but for now we are fine dating (for the 5th year now). Wait until you're done with hs (and college) to get married. By that time, you will pretty much know for sure that this is the one and you will have a lot of great times together without ostracizing your family because of your decision. Anyway, it really doesn't seem like it's been 5 years since I started dating my b/f. If you are truly meant to be with the guym the time will go by so fast you won't even realize how long it's been until you actually count.

A 16 year old, does not need to get married!!!!

There are better ways to show your maturity and desire to get out from under your parents/guardians rules than getting married. There is so much of life to learn and experience and PLENTY of time to marry when you know more about who you are as an adult and what you truly want out of life...you are still quite young (or whomever the 16 yr old is that is contemplating marriage) and even though it's easy to think you know what you want, you'll be glad down the road if you don't do this now...listen to those of us that have lived those years already...I married at 19 because I was ready to be grown up and on my own, but couldn't afford to support myself...

If I could only go back and take a different path...nobody told me not to marry though, because they knew I wouldn't listen...I was "in luv"...

I think you'll find if you wait until you are of legal age, this idea won't hold the same appeal...it's not easy, love isn't all you need, and marriage isn't the way to independence...

Why, do you want to mess up your life in the least amount of time?

precious02k
sorry the magic number in the US is 18

No 16 year old should be getting married with or without parental consent. If a pregnancy is involved, deal with it and tell your families. Stay in school so you can spell words like "concent" properly.

Don't worry, if the Libs get their way, no-one will have to have parental consent for anything.

California: If either the bride or groom is under 18, at least one of the minor's parents, or legal guardian, must appear with the couple. Certified copies of birth certificates are required. The couple must also schedule an appointment with a counselor and then appear before a superior court judge.

Maine: Applicants must be over 18 years old. A license shall not be issued to anyone under the age of 16 without written parental consent and the written consent of a judge.

Minnesota: Applicants between the ages of 15 and 18 must have the consent of a parent, guardian or the judge of juvenile court. ¾Applicants younger than 15 needs the written consent of a parent of guardian and the consent of a juvenile court judge.

Rhode Island: Under 18: A Minor's Permit to marry must be completed if a female applicant is 16 or 17 years of age. The permit must be signed and notarized in the presence of the City or Town Clerk or any clerk employed in that office. ¾A female under age 16 and a male under age 18 cannot secure a marriage license in the State of Rhode Island without the approval of the Family Court.

Texas: The age is 18 without from a parent or your legal guardian. If under the age of 16, the law requires that the couple receives a court order before being allowed to marry.

Other situations - Pregnant Teens: Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland and Oklahoma allow pregnant teens or teens who have already had a child to get married without parental consent. In Florida, Kentucky, and Oklahoma, the young couple must have authorization from a court. Maryland requires that the minor be at least 16. Even with parental approval, many states will require court approval when a person is 16 years of age or less.

They can file for emancipation from their parents. In some states you can get married if the bride is pregnant if you are under 18.

I'm sure that you are in love and think that this is a great idea. But your parents are still legally responsible for you. Can't you try to wait another year? Just to make sure? If it's love, it will last.

dont listen to these people 16 is not too young to get married, in some cultures women are still getting married at 13 and having children the only reason that men and women are not ready is because of the parents inability to make them ready in time, god made it to where men and women are ready by age 13 to have children and it seems everyone has forgot this fact and supposedly you arent suppose to have children till your married oh wow does anyone else see a big neon sign?
