Is this an over-the-top arrest for a 'trifling' crime?

Is this an over-the-top arrest for a 'trifling' crime?

I mean covering fruit with custard never got Fanny Craddock in trouble with the police!

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20090308/tuk-mandelson-custard-activist-arrested-6323e80.html

I do soooooo love the line "the Cabinet minister also revealed that the attack had left him with a "slight irritation" on his face." Haha, that's nothing to the irritation his face causes me!

Not homophobic by the way, just having fun. I can't stand Mandleson though. And I make no apologies for that!

Lord Charles
Let's get this straight:

Illegal invasion of a sovereign state resulting in the death of hundreds of thousands of innocent people = Good

Chucking a cup of green custard over an unelected government minister = Bad

I'm glad we've got that cleared up.

Mr Sceptic
Will she be given bail?

or remanded in 'custardy'!!

I'll get me coat.

This wasn't exactly a peaceful protest. And assaulting others even in a mild way is against the law.

If this protester gets ten years in jail. Then indeed that would be excessive. But a few days in jail would be a fair punishment and a discouragement to others who also might want to do something like this.

Me and Mandy laughed this off at the time - typically we sneak off later and get our own back eh ?

I don't think so. He assaulted the minister. The weapon may have been custard but he still assaulted him.

We felt sorry for the green slime I think it suited him, although I think she should have put a bucket of it over him to make it more worth while. Then left the bucket on his head as an anti-vomit measure for those of us who do NOT want to look at the slippery little fecker.

The point isn't who the wrong action was done to, but rather, whether the action in itself was wrong. It isn't a subjective test, it's objective.

Look at it this way, if someone had thrown custard over a little old lady, a disabled person or a child, would you view that action as wrong? I'm guessing that most people would agree that would be terrible and shouldn't be allowed. If that is the case then the conduct itself is wrong and in the interests of justice, the same consequences need to befall anyone who performs the wrongful conduct, regardless of whether or not the victim was liked by the population at large.

"isitme"
A typical response from some contributors, I can't find anything homophobic about the question.

It was a cracking shot though!

A Dull Man
It is all perception. Goodness, I have completed 5 years in Iraq and in that part of the world, this whole story seems too trifling (but the Iraqis are chuckling and I see an occasional tear in their eyes as they read it). However I have come from a dire situation and realize those who are living at home and are comfortable, might see this as 'serious'. I just cannot fathom what is the problem. Someone might have gone without desert. Yes, "Trifling" does come to my mind. However, it is funny.

On a more positive note, I am home from the wars darling. No more sandbox for the moment. Does anyone have a video of this?

At first sight, this story appears funny.

However, how would you feel if your mother/father/son/daughter had custard thrown over them in the street?

I'm no fan of Mandelson, but such loutish behaviour is unacceptable.

My dear Lady F, the man is a blithering idiot and good show to the young filly, she should have used great Aunt E’s custard mix, it resembles a cross between plaster and concrete mixed with 10mm ballast stone, alas one has to tell Great Aunt E that it tastes wonderful as she tends to go into one of her senile rages if not. Tally ho

Haven't bothered to follow this one, but we had a similar incident where the Prime Minister was pied. The arrest was massive but it could have been an assassination attempt since there was no way to know in advance what was in the pie. I think the final sentence was reasonable. Check either CBC or CTV web sites and see if they have the story on file. It was probably 10 years ago.

What makes this amazing is that John Prescott made a press release a after the incident to say that this was a clear case of assault and should face the full arm of the law - a slightly different story to his response when he punched a guy with a full bloodied left hook and nothing more was said.

B. O. B.
Reminds me of the guy who threw a shoe at G Bush. Apparently he got tortured and several years in prison.

I would have given both of them an honorary pardon and a medal.

People who act like pudding should expect to be coated in custard, most of the current batch of mathematically dyslexic political buffoons should be replaced by the superior intelligence of the Amoeba.

Tales of the dimmer bank
oh look here said dimmer buffoon one the bank is bankrupt, oh goody shall we buy it says dimmer buffoon two we can use tax payer money, yes that's a good idea buffoon one says buffoon two we'll buy it and sell it back later when it's making money again, then we can right off the debt and the tax payer can pay the bill, ok says dimmer buffoon one, we'll put even dimmerer buffoon three in charge of that, is there anything else we can do to create problems for the tax payer dimmer buffoon one asked dimmer buffoon two, we can import more thick none English speaking foreigners because they make us look less dim, oh brilliant and we can let them have full use of the tax payers facilities dimmer two, they can have free everything and somewhere to live and enjoy it all at the tax payers expense, oh crikey dimmer two brilliant and that will upset the tax payers so much they'll forget about the bank and we can pay our self huge pensions, oh I do love you dimmer one, trumpets dimmer two,

The End
Good bye children the dimmers have to rest now, bye bye children says dimmer one bye bye children says dimmer two.

No not really it was an assault so the person should have been arrested, you should also take your homophobic remarks elsewhere.
