Is this considered insult or verbal harassment?

A biochem. professor at my university constantly tells me my questions about biochemistry are "silly" (in a bad tone and in anger). During her office hours, she told me that I "better make it quick because I don't have time to answer your silly questions". (This is supposed to be 10 minutes per student.) She insulted me in anger. I asked my question (clarification on why I got points off of a homework assignment). She explained, and then told me to "GET OUT". I went to the door, and before I could leave, she spent another 1-2 minutes insulting me again, saying she was "disgusted" about these questions.
I am a 3.8 GPA biochem student at a good university. I have been in good relations with all my previous professors (my relations were very good. I received an internship and letters of rec from them) until her. I have confidence that my questions are only to ask for clarification on diagrams and info. she presented in class.

She insults me a lot. Even in front of the whole class one time, saying that I "pester (her) with these silly questions after class every time".
I feel discriminated because she is willing to give 10 min. to every other student, but not the same amount of time to me. I am asking fair, material-related questions. I was also insulted when I am taking efforts to understand the material. I received in A on all my previous prerequisite biochem courses, but she told me I should not belong in her class.
I am unsure this goes under verbal harassment. Even if it does, I am the only witness to this. (I doubt the insult she made in class will really do anything. People will dismiss it as a one time insult.)

Either way this is classified, I am not going to talk to her anymore. However, not talking to a professor about material because I am intimidated by her or have a fear of being insulted (in general, talking to her creates an uncomfortable atmosphere) makes me feel even more discriminated because of her personal hatred against me, and it puts me in a disadvantage against other students for having inequal inaccessibility to faculty to ask biochem questions to.

Please tell me your opinion. Serious answers please. If the answers tend towards verbal harassment, I may do more research to verify, and ultimately complain to the university.

It sounds to me like she somehow feels threatened by you. Maybe you are too smart, too attractive, too confident, whatever (obviously you are not "too" anything, I'm referring to what her perception might be).

I don't think it qualifies as harassment, but it is terrible teaching technique. All I can say is that sometimes you run to people like that--co-workers, bosses, neighbors. You could complain, but complaints like that always seem to make the complainer look bad.

My gut instinct is that you avoid unnecessary interactions and avoid making yourself a target in class. Not fair, you shouldn't have to do it, but I think your goal should be to just get through this, and avoid any more of her classes if possible.

Good luck, sounds like you have a bright future.

yeah, you will get that. Im not in college (im 14, high school) but EVERY YEAR i get a teacher that hates me for no reason, Im also a pretty good student. I think that it is just a clash of personalities between you and your professor. Just tell yourself that you only have to put up with it for an hour (or however long her class is) and feel relieved when you don't have her anymore :D

Envy, Intimidation are signs that you are THAT GOOD! Get a tape recorder take it to the Dean someone like that shouldn't be teaching

Don't worry it could possibly be taht your teacher see's something in you that she is trying to see shine through OR it could just be that this is the realistic nature of your teacher. If you honestly feel that its a insult (clearly stated by you) that it is a insult and that if it gets too hard to handle then say switch out. There is no reason to feel intimidated by your teacher, cause to think of it your will only see her during this class only and then after don't worry about and school is almost done anyways so there is no need to worry considering the fact that you feel insulted by your teacher.
Also having your teacher call your questions "silly" doesn't seem to be much of threat or insult to me.
Hope this helps

No - this isn't harassment, although she's being unfair. Give your questions a break - don't raise any for a week or so and then see if the situation improves. If not , then think of complaining.

Get a recorder and record it. Get up to 5 insults and you'll be good to go. Report that to a higher official in the university.
