People now-a-days are so caught up on being politically correct, that they aren't even allowed to make decisions for themselves about what Doctor to chose.
I wouldn't choose Dr. Castro either. This isn't necessary racism, just a natural bias. Am I forced to see a hispanic or black doctor so as not to offend someone? No I am not. Just like I am allowed to choose a bar called "Stewarts" over one called "Da Hood".
I probably wouldn't choose a doctor named Babatumbe Noari either.

lilphillymami: The question posed is dealing with chosing a doctor from a list your insurance company gave you. Usually "world renowned" doctors aren't handed out by most insurance companies. |

no, maybe someone feels more comfortable with a doctor of their ethnic background. for example, my grandma only sees hispanic doctors. not because she is racist, but because she feels more comfortable with someone that can speak spanish |

No, because one's name is not always representative of their race or religion. |

Maybe you feel like you have more in common with one of them, like a common background. |

Not in the slightest! But why would you worry as it's your health you are talking about and no matter who you pick someone could call you a racist..
Oh BTW my name is Juan Castro... why are you defacing me all over the net?? Isn't that Deformation of Character? See how silly that is??? |

No, but you should check your state medical board online(its free and easy) to see if he has any malpractice suits or complaints against his license. Juan Castro may be a world renowned physician and John Davis may be a scalpel happy quack and you wouldn't know just because you were biased and un-informed. |

I would have picked Davis, yes it could probably be considered opinionated or racist i guess. |

yes, but we all do it. |

What if you pick a doctor because they have an Asian name? Is that racist? If you're not Asian? |

i guess it certainlycould be considered racist but how does one know that dr. juan was not a born american citizen and perhaps his father and grandfather as well. some of the very best doctors i have ever encountered have been dr. malik an indian, dr. bajash, another indian. my all time favorite doctor was a dr. khalaf a graduate of the baghdad university. |

Not really but it is not a good way to pick a doctor! It is better to do research as to whether they have been sued for malpractice and what their area of specialty is.
I have had many different doctors. Black, White, Indian, Asian etc... Some of the best doctors I had were not white male doctors! I had an Indian doctor save my husband. His area of specialty was the type of cancer my husband had. If we had not found him, my husband would probably not be alive!
Bigotry can hurt you in more ways than you know! |

depends on your thoughts. If you pick because of their name it is racist. |

mauilina

yes, you are. assuming that you picked the english one and ditched the spanish one, reason being their background / provenience. you could not know who is more competent at it.
i go to a surgery where i can see any of the four gp's available at the time, so randomly i have seen them all. the one with a foreign name turned out to be the most competent and professional for me. |

Racist is based on race, isn`t it? My point of view, there is no race if you believe Adam and Eve are parents of human race. Everybody has his(her) own point of view, isn`t it? |

Racist, maybe.
STUPID, definitely. |

The question is poorly posed. Is Dr. Davis identifiable, racially, by his name? Of course not.
If the patient has Spanish as his/her first language he may assume that Dr. Castro may speak Spanish, etc., etc. |

it depends why you picked that doctor
but its possible =] |

No...I agree, it's based on race, not names. Though I do know that women will pick doctors based on there names...like a Jill instead of John. That's just because some women are more comfortable with a woman as a doctor then a man. Or maybe some will pick Juan Castro because they speak spanish and think that this doctor might as well. But that's a culture thing, not race. |
