18-year old motorcyclists that pass their test are restricted to what engine size they can ride for the first two years. Then they have to sit another test to get the licence for a bigger bike. Don't understand the exact rules as I got my bike licence old style test years ago (part 1 and part 2).

18-year old that pass their test can go buy a ferrari for that matter and legally drive it if they, or their parents, can afford the insurance, with no solid driving experience behind them whatsoever ...
At the time I passed my car test because it got me out of having to pass Part 2 within 2 years :-)

I think there's a good point in this post and would approve a law which restricted engine size on cars for that age group.
It is, of course, age discrimination although lawful since it's on public safety grounds and outside the remit of the domestic and European legislation. It's also double standards since bike (which are more environmentally friendly, generally) users are being more heavily legislated against than car users. So the answer to the question is that it's both. |

Discrimination.
If an 18 year old has an accident on a powerful motorbike he is only likely to kill himself. If an 18 year old in a high performance car has an accident they are likely to take innocent victims with them as well. |

No there is a bloody good reason as any biker will tell you. A small bike can kill you as it almost did me. You need experience and allot of common sense to ride a big bike. As for an 18 year old driving a Ferrari? No one would insure him or her. As a car driver with 36 years experience, and a clean licence, I have seen too many bikers injure or kill themselves on high performance bikes. Always remember there are blind spots in cars, lorries ETC. I live in Norfolk and have been appalled at the driving of some bikers. Keep safe ! |
