The DMV is not supposed to issue ones with swear words. They have censors that review them for swear words, but they get through all the time, especially slang words. At collegehumor.com they have an extensive collection http://www.collegehumor.com/tag:license-plate |

public indecency. |

They just won't make them. I don't know if it's considered illegal, but if you submitted a license plate request with a swear, they wouldn't make it. |

The DMV will not issue a license plate that includes profanity in the first place. |

Your local DMV won't issue a plate with swear words on it.
For a while, some people were able to get the plate 3M TA3 issued, until someone at DMV wisely figured out what that plate says when viewed in someone's rear-view mirror. |

It's not necessarily illegal, states won't put anything popularly offensive on a license plate. |

It is up to the DMV. They review applications for potential issues. You cannot get arrested for having a certain license plate given to you by the DMV, if that is what you are mean. You cannot get arrested for requesting a certain license plate. The worse that can happen is that the DMV will reject your special-plate application. |

No. No state will issue a plate that they felt was obscene in any way.
I would not want one. |

I have always referred to those as vanity plates. In California you can buy most any letter / number combination your little heart desires but there are exceptions. Any combination that some censor/s have determined to be obscene or in some other way offensive are simply not produced and you can't buy them. Since you can't buy them the only way to have them is to make them yourself or have some company make them for you. In either case they are not valid license plates and you can't display them as such. If you have procured one by hook or crook and display it in a fashion not intended to be used as a valid plate I think you can do most anything you want. Other states may have different laws and of course you are subject to having your vehicle vandalized or your body assaulted by someone you have offended. |

It's not illegal to TRY, but your DMV wouldn't let you do it. |

I don't think you can have the full swear word on there. Maybe if you abbreviated the word it wouldnt be so illegal |

Your state issuing agency would deny your request. |
