Is this legal?
Find answers to your legal question.

Is this legal?

I was shopping the other day at a clothing store in El Paso TX. I went to the dressing room to try on some clothes and they told me I had to pay $1 to use the dressing room. At first I was like 'Oh, you mean a deposit' The salesman said, No, its a dollar to use the dressing room. I gave him the clothes and left.

Is it legal to charge to use a dressing room? I know in some businesses they won't let you use the bathroom unless you are a patron. But, not pay a fee. And yeah, it was only a dollar....but come on. It was the principle.....you know.
Additional Details
I'm pretty sure he was working there. The dressing rooms were behind the cash register area....and he was working the cash register. I almost wish it was just a scam. I can't believe people practice such bad business.

depends on the state law but if you ask me i would tell them to stick the dollar up their a$$

Kota
Well it is a service they provide though it is not ethical they can more than likely get away with it because it is not against the law.

ednasorcas
That is the first I have ever heard of it. Check with local law enforcement.

They can if they want to, ( no law against it) but of course it is not a good business practice.

Was you sure this was a real salesperson, they got me in Atlanta before at a parking lot, a man there taking money with a apron on, turns out he was just takiing the money, did not work for the lot

Katie
I don't think that is right! It should be free!

I'm pretty sure it's legal. About all you can do is not shop there anymore.

The Rebel
You did the right thing. I would have made a statement about the store owners mother.

KingMickey
I don't think so! You should report that!

I've never heard of that before. I'd have done exactly what you did.

I've never heard of it and it is a horrible business practice but my guess is that it is legal. They can run their business as they like and you sound like you made a good decision by leaving. The more business they lose, the more likely it is that they will change.

Wait a minute...

I do not know the laws in Texas...sorry...but you can call the police station and find out if, a BIG IF it is legal to charge $1.00 just to try on some clothes....Out in CA here, there is no charge to try on clothes!!! so i honestly don't know!!! I know it's the principle of the thing!!!Oh brother!!!

It is their business & they can do as they please (even if it is really bad business practice) If I were you, I'd call the store manager & ask what is the fee for trying clothes. If the manager tells you that it doesn't cost anything, go back to the store in person & check if the person who tried to charge you is an employee, if he is report him to the manager if not, inform the manager that someone is trying to rip ppl off in his/her store.

Starlight
It's legal - just not good buisness.

Likely the salesperson was trying to rip you off... you did the right thing by leaving.

Sounds like a scam to me! Call your local police and ask them.

dave

shoppingontherun
I would report it to the store manager. Sounds like this clerk was pulling a scam!
