Job requires me to pay back stolen money or else I'm fired?

Hello, I'm a delivery driver for a bread company. On my route my car was broken into and all the cash from my vendors was stolen. I'm at fault because even though the doors were locked I did leave one of the windows cracked open a little bit, which is how they were able to break in and steal the money. With this being said, my company told me I was required to repay the stolen money $550 asap or else I'll lose my job. Can they do this? Aren't companies insured for situations like this? I live in New Hampshire. A couple weeks ago I also was in a car accident with a company vehicle. Nothing major, just rear ended a driver in front of me that slammed on his breaks. I was at fault and now I'm required to repay the $500 deductible asap that they need back for getting the truck fixed or else i'm fired. Is this legal also? I just want to make sure i'm not getting screwed over by this. None of this was mentioned in the company's contract that I signed when I received employment.
